I think Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is the poster child of this.

He also did an astounding cover of Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode, turning it from an ironic song into an expression of his own sincere Christian beliefs.

Also Trent Reznor more or less agreed that Cash more or less owned his song.

... and Johnny Cash's covers of 90's classics. The aforementioned "Hurt" is his most famous, but there's also these.

And I wasn't the first in this thread to notice Johnny Cash's Personal Jesus.
