Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Assassins creed shadows succeeded on negative publicity. You have to think about its perception objectively. The audiences did not care if Yasuke was a real samurai, much like they did not care if Rodrigo Borgia was a fist-fighting reddit atheist, or if George Washington was a despotic monarch. Absurdly glamorized historical fantasy has always been its appeal. This lead to people buying it out of pure spite against the obnoxious favela monkeys spamming "YOU CAN DESTROY LE SHRINES" engagement slop threads on twitter and 4chan with no end.

Did Shadows succeed though? Last I read it underperformed?

Also I wish Assassin's Creed was nearly as edgy as you think. I'm still pissed they retconned the series' lore on WW2 as being a grand conspiracy to consolidate control over nations of the world and that Hitler, Stalin, Churchill and FDR were all Templars that were in on it all along pretending to be against each other. Probably the only time Ubisoft had the balls to really push the envelope on pissing people off. Then they went back on most of it and made it so that it's all "le ebil Nahtzees" instead of Assassins fighting on both sides with no particular allegiance to any ideal except stopping the war and preventing the Templars from seizing control.

I actually enjoy the generic Kemco published JRPGs for brainless fun times. Not every game has to be a masterpiece for me to find enjoyment in it.

  • I like Blighttown. Sure, getting hit by super aids blowdarts and finding out you have no blooming purple moss lead to a lot of asshurt at the time, but in hindsight exploring Blighttown is probably one of the most memorable experiences I had playing DaS due to how intense and nerve wracking it was. Finally emerging into the Valley of Drakes felt like a personal victory. With the PC port the only objectively terrible thing about it (the framerate shitting itself) was also eliminated.
  • The only good thing the Dead Space remake did was lifting Dead Space 2's combat and zero-g movement and putting it in the first game. Disregarding how they completely fagged up the game among a litany of other shitty stylistic and creative changes, even the things people pretty much unanimously praise the game for feel unnecessary and tacked on. "OMG you can freely traverse the ship and revisit earlier areas!" ...Which is likely why they tacked on pointless padding like sidequests and clearance levels because they realised there wasn't actually any reason to do that, so they had to come up with some low effort justification for the existence of that feature. This isn't like Resident Evil games where revisiting areas gets you items or clues you need to progress. Side quests boil down to "go here and watch a hologram" or "go there and pick up a datapad", while clearance levels are just loot dumps to unlock. Yawn.

As somebody with epilepsy, the epilepsy warnings that every game seems to come with now are gay and completely pointless. If you know you have photosensitive epilepsy, you already know that anything a monitor displays has the possibility to cause a seizure and if you DON'T know you have photosensitive epilepsy, you wouldn't know to be concerned anyway.

It's the kind of ostentatious faux-caring faux-inclusive signaling that accomplishes nothing.

Its actually legally required

Whacky Races on the Dreamcast is the best 'mario kart' game and demolition racers on the Dreamcast was better than Demolition Derby.

No console has pushed genres, innovation and the industry more than the OG Xbox, but the majority of the games that did so were obscure ones that almost nobody played.
That's actually Diddy Kong racing. Also the Naughty Dog kart racers (Jak X and Krash Team Racing) are also really good But I will agree that Mario Kart is the worst kart racer.

Agree to disagree. Whacky Races was great and was as good as it gets when it comes to staying as true as possible to the source IP. They even made Dick Dasterdly's car by far the fastest (because in the show he gets ahead to ponce about before bollocksing up).

for me, gaming died when manuals were removed. A small thing on the surface, but it signalled that money was priority over pride and the love of the artform. It also gave rise to journoscum 'writing' about games because easy-to-find information in the booklets, now forced you to search online.
I still have my Baldur's Gate 2 manual. The amount of creativity, care, and wit that went into it surpasses most of the writing in games today.

I remember mine fondly and the big cardboard game box that the case came in. I couldn't play the game straight away as I bought it when the family were on holiday. I spent days just reading the manual and the skills and imagining my builds.
A fantastic manual.

The OXbox's reputation for having about six or seven good actual exclusives (read: not shitty PC ports) is entirely deserved.

Said by people who never played the gems, parroted by people who weren't into gaming/alive when it was happening and only know about the console from Phil Spencer's fascination with the wankest of xbox games. More often that not, the OG Xbox was slagged off by mad sony fans because the PS2 wasn't been jizzed over enough.

Even the creation of the Xbox was a proper console story.
