Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Just spare me. Everyone knows people make excuses for Valve because of Half-Life 2, the most overrated game ever made. Yeah, Steam has sales, cool, so does Wal-Mart. Difference is nobody really gets emotional about how you can get cheap mayonnaise thanks to Samw's saintly blessedness.
The man really can't count to 3. Team Fortress 3? Half-Life 3? The fucking sun would explode before Valve ever comes out with those.

Half Life 3? Absolutely. Finish that cliffhanger. Team Fortress 3? No, Overwatch has already pioneered the hero shooter genre. Even so, hero shooters have faded out now. Portal 3? Nah, there are already "rage bait" puzzle games like The Stanley Parable that mess with people.

When it comes to games that are available on both Steam or the company's own Launcher (i.e. Ubisoft Connect or Microsoft Store), I'd prefer to get them from the company's own launcher, since you still will need the said account, i.e. a Microsoft one, if you purchase it from Steam, and you have to link the account up.

But again popularity is irrelevant to quality. Quake filters people because it's a good game, because the better player always wins, it's a fair game. People don't want good games, they want to win 50% of the time undeservedly through match fixing based matchmaking. Same reason RTS like Starcraft are really good but barely played. You will never EVER luck into a win against a better player in an RTS, it's too multifaceted with skill based variables.

In the case of Age of Empires 2, while it is still niche compared to other genres, it did see massive growth when the Definitive Edition was released, and most players play either the Campaigns or games against the AI. Also, most (?) people play Co-Op Missions in SC2 compared to the ranked ladder, I think.

Do the Quake games have modes where you can play against the AI, like in Unreal Tournament?

No, you can learn and improve it's just that it requires learning and improving and people want immediate dopamine.
There's no good learning environment left in these games anymore because you're either playing against people way above your level or getting kicked from the server for not being good enough or not being a part of the group that has been playing together for decades. The player counts are abysmal so it's not like you can just go play somewhere else.

The only thing that "solves" this is tf2's worst element which is random crits.
For me it's the classes that solve this problem, if you're not doing much as Soldier or Demoman you can always switch to Engineer or Medic and provide almost immediate value to the team through teleporters or healing.

boot straps, no pussies allowed.

demo and scout dominate the game in all formats. Even competitive which removes random factors is dominated by scouts.

My unpopular opinion: in the next few years the public will view gamers as weirdos again, in much the same way they did 2 or so decades ago.

Anything gaming-related gets infested with troons and furfags and pronouns bullshit insanely fast now and most people do not like when less than 0.01% of world population somehow finds its way into controlling 90% of all gaming subreddits/discords/twitter accounts and tries to groom their kids into sodomy.

Main discord servers and modding communities of pretty much all games are completely pozzed now, whether it be DOOM, Fallout, Half-Life, Sonic, GTA, Final Fantasy, etc etc.
Communities of like-minded people who are interested in lore or want to improve the base game get infiltrated, completely pozzed, basically get The Ship of Theseus-esque treatment and transform into groomfest and porn-addiction HQs.

Also see the RetroAchievements and the TCRF threads, tl;dr: troons tried to take over the already established communities which resulted in most senior members either leaving voluntarily or getting harrassed until they left.

Your average Joe has too much going on in his life to learn how to code or to moderate a gaming community so I really don't know how to solve this,

Mario 3 was good, all cred to Mario 3, but Mario 2 was more fun.
US mario 2? Actually agree with this take. Mario 3 is peak. But my nostalgia will always make 2 be better. IDC that it is a reskin of doki doki. I like it.

JP? Nah. I respect anyone who has finished it fully more than once. Even more if you are autistic enough to speedrun it. But hell no. I beat it once, beat all the secret levels and I was done. fuck that game I don't need blood pressure issues. lmfao.

That's what Nintendo of America felt. So the Japanese put Mario in Doki Doki Panic and shipped that as Mario 2 overseas

Mario 3 is like Mario Sunshine where they really pushed you hard, but it was satisfying to win.

Super Mario World was my jam. Yoshi was a childhood memory of mine as far as I can remember. I found it funny how a different-colored Yoshi effectively made Mario a Targaryen because he can have a dragon that can fly and spit fire, eradicating entire platoons of enemies with one fire breath.

Thing is. I get Mario 2 (JP). And I love it for what it is. It's a damn good game. Even if I think it's absolute bullshit. Hard but good game, but fuck me. I don't want to play it again unless I'm with some of my old buddies and we are wanting to have some drinks and have fun with a game that to us might as well be a kaizo hack. (Which is funny since I've finished kaizo Mario lmfao)

Hotish take I guess. NOA made the right choice making a way easier game Mario 2. That and doki doki panic is a good game.

I agree. I still have a lot of childhood memories with the western Mario 2. I also love the original Mario 2 (JP), but I realize it was basically the official equivalent of a Kaizo hack, except it's more primitive.

For sure. Pretty much every other game after it in the series beats it just for being technically better. But I've always told people to atleast try it, and try to push though its bullshit. That being said, the wind levels can blow me, and I hope Miyamoto is tortured in hell for those.

I find it funny personally since bullshit kaizo games are some of my favorite games. I wanna be the guy and other games like those are some of my favorite things out there since they are very open about being unfair.

I pretty much accepted that SMB2 (JP) was unfair. They were legit making a game that only the most autistic retard who checks every possibility can win. I'm talking about jumping randomly like a moron to find a secret coin box that you can use to jump forward.

Some thunk but most games are designed to basically be pseduo jobs where you go in to not have fun but do your grind and leave so interacting is a coinflip. When you do interact you get the situations you mentioned but a lot of that is also due to purposeful game design making you feel like you're progressing only for the system to throw you down so you feel like you need to correct those losses.

Quake 3 just isnt as good as Unreal Tournament in like any way. Sure it has cool lighting effects and is "faster" (not a win over UT in any way) but UT oddly enough supports modern resolutions so I cant even say that Quake wins graphically.

Unreal Tournament has better bots, more varied (and IMO better maps), more games modes, a better soundtrack and the guns are more fun to play with. Quake 3s weapons almost feel like an afterthought with the Railgun being so far above the rest. All the guns in UT feel like they have a use to kill. I would also say that UT looks more appealing. Its cool that Quake 3 has a defined look to its arenas, but at the end of the day im playing an arena game against bots. Variance is OK, lore is secondary here (funny enough the UT series went to shit once it started trying to focus on lore).

I commend Quake 3 for holding onto its audience but to me its baffling because of how similar they are. Its like back when Sports games had different developers. Like I dont think anyone would say that X baseball game is better than MVP Baseball 05, but we basically have that here with Quake 3.
