Undertale / Deltarune / Toby Fox Discussion

Toby Fox is allergic to focusing on the main battle system of Deltarune and instead we need countless dev hours spent on minigames,
The battle system is too simple for its own good. Since you're encouraged to NOT kill enemies for the most part, you can ignore the Attack stat, thus ditching one of the main stats. Healing items that heal the entire party are always better than the others, and you'll want the gear that gives you the most defense. All you can do is interesting bullet patterns as you sure won't damage race anyone (outside of the evil route).

On Twitter, there are tons of accounts roleplaying as Deltarune characters.
In response, a bunch of accounts have popped up roleplaying as chud Deltarune characters.

imo its mostly corny, but it's an honorable use of free will nonetheless.

Maybe Toby should've made it so certain weapons and armor pieces could unlock extra acts or something.

But fucking nevermind I guess.

I assume it's not like Undertale where if you damage enemies enough you can spare them that way? (Never bothered to try.)
At least then it'd still be somewhat relevant.

You would be correct. Damaging enemies has, as far as I know, no effect on sparing in DR. If you attack them you just fuck up their health.

Building up the separate spare meter via ACTs until they enter a spareable state is the only way.

I've gotten through nearly every enemy encounter in the game without attacking once. The only time I even bother to hit the button is when you're fighting an un-sparable boss like King or the Knight.

I wonder how the fuck anyone ever figured that out on their own.
Trial and error, genuinely. When you do Weird Route things there's a little jingle that plays and a different jingle that plays when you fuck it up and leave the route, so it's just a matter of figuring out what specific dialogue/gameplay options triggered it until they got to the end.

Remember there was a TWO YEAR gap between the release of Ch 2 and Ch 3+4, people were able to exhaustively explore basically everything in the chapter.

The one thing I was completely clueless about was the alternate route. I've been reading about it today and it sounds interesting so I want to give it a try, though I wonder how the fuck anyone ever figured that out on their own. If not for the fact that I saw a post about it online, I would've never realized it was a thing.

It's hinted at if you do Chapter 3 Sword Route (accessible if you S-Rank each challenge).

I just found it naturally (noticed Noelle can freeze enemies, figured it'd do something if I froze everyone, and so on)

Also yeah this, Chapter 3 outright tells you how to do the WR if you try to get the shadow mantle to fight the knight. That's how you're supposed to figure out how to do it, but gamers gonna game.

/v/ during chapter 2 release found it in about 2 days.
It was the most exciting the game has ever been.

Eventual Kris fight:
>begin with acting
>Kris destroys your ability to act
>try using spare
>Kris destroys your ability to spare
>keep using defend
>Kris destroys your ability to defend
>keep using items
>Kris destroys your ability to use items
>no choice but to fight and kill or keep missing till he offs himself

Like father like son.
>Kris doesn't have his or your soul
>'hang on, doesn't he just die without a soul?'
>wait on the fight menu without inputting anything
>his skin slowly becomes greyer and greyer
>eventually passes out without the need for killing him

KINO

Not really. Hurting enemies enough gets them Tired, which lets you spare them with a pacify spell that Ralsy has and Sus does too. The issue is that these spells use Tension which is better spent using other magic, and it's easy to overcommit and accidentally hurt too much the targeted enemy, causing them to run away. Hence I only bother to attack enemies which I have recruited already and without Susie, as the fighter of the team is too good at hurting enemies, in a game that you don't want to hurt enemies, kek.

Somehow this is the second time I am posting about this guy on KF. Logan TimeLierG seems to be fighting the entire Deltarune fanbase, with said fanbase now calling him a pedophile since he drew cub porn according to them. Oh right, he is also a gay furry.

It all started after he used a thumbnail featuring George Floyd for some reason. You'd think this is some Bigbunjeee ripoff channel, but not at all. Looking at his channel, he seems to be trying to troll Deltarune fans, but it wasn't all that successful until now. Then again, whether he's ever actually managed to troll anyone is up in the air. This could be funny, but I haven't dug into it yet.

Slightly unrelated, but back when Chapter 2 came out, I wondered, perhaps foolishly. "Gee, that Weird Route thing is pretty nutso! I wonder how Toby is going to handle a character clearly important like Berdly having a fate that varies so much!"
Remember when Noelle briefly joined our party during Chapter 2 we thought this would be a regular thing? That she and Berdly and possibly others will return? That people expected Toriel to be an active main character of Chapter 3 instead of barely being in it? That people expected like, a dozen characters to join us and kept drawing dark world versions of them?

Well too fucking bad, we all got cucked.

Also, on that mario shit, it wouldn't be so bad if tobyfox used his fat stacks of money to hire actual programmers, like, actual computer obsessed huge fucking nerds who jerk off to the size of their github repos and an actual manager to whip them into lead agile scrum networked productivity or whatever the current set of buzzwords are. It would have been very possible to make Deltarune a "larger" game with more crunch, more gameplay and mechanics to it. Alas, he hired tumblrinas and all those can do is to fag up games with endless pronoun shit, faggots, niggers and assorted degeneracy while having a seething resentment for the actual players,

It is incredibly fucking hilarious though on some level that most people WANT your quirky dialogue visual novel about people with mental issues and a town with dark secret, they want it MORE than the gameplay you are trying to force in. Toby is the LITERAL only instance of this EVER happening in gaming, when his core fanbase is actively telling him to fucking knock it off with the new gameplay mechanics, we just want to see the story.

Got about 35 hours out of it and I'd say 80-90% of it was enjoyable.
Glad to hear you did not miss out based on the reputation of troons latching on to it. I've always found Deltarune to be perfectly paced, just the right length, just the right difficulty and just the right amount every serving. It doesn't overstay its welcome, but stays fresh and exciting and when it slowly starts becoming too much, the episode ends. The right blend of quirky puzzles, bullet hell fights for casuals who don't play them and story, the real meat of the game. Until chapter 5 of course when it shits the bed. I wish more video games would be as... coherent as Deltarune chapters 1-4. They had a perfect scope, knew what it wanted to be and delivered it it perfectly portioned chunks each year.

I love how some deltarune youtubers are calling people critical of the chapter "theory brainrotted" and insist thats the only reason why they have a problem with it, meanwhile they're entire existence is to just pump out theory pig slop.

Theories are not what made me disappointed, it's that every chapter it's the same bullshit. Weak payoffs, events and emotional beats written off as jokes, and stakes that feel weak because the only thing we (allegedly) have to take seriously is the roaring/kidnappings that Susie herself doesn't even seem to give enough shit about to not goof off every chapter. but god forbid we aren't reminded constantly how IMPORTANT it is NOT to force Noelle to do anything other than throw herself at Susie. THAT is the one thing you HAVE to take seriously.

Edit: also lol everyone pretending they actually give a shit about gameplay now LOL. Probably because that is the only thing everyone at least can agree with being enjoyable in chapter 5, but I know none of these niggas really cared.

The fact that you made Noelle do Snowgrave and fuck up Berdly is for some reason treated as a more serious and terrible thing than the evil demon being of prophecy running around and kidnapping people and nearly literally causing the end of the world like half a day ago in universe.
Pretty sure that Snowgrave would've been able to fuck up the Knight and the Titan something fierce considering Noelle by the end of the Weird Route was strong enough to insta-kill Blue Light Specil Spamton (that even serious Kris with X-Slash couldnt do shit against) with Ice Shock alone.

But whatever, I guess the stakes are actually really low. When you compare the Weird Route to the actual stakes of the story, you have to wonder why the game is trying to shame you for it, even if Noelle didn't go mad and boundary break.

For a series founded on playing with game tropes, Toby's really starting to settle into a formula.
