I like Masked Rider, but of course, I'm such a fan of 80s/90s family atmosphere.

It really is a crap adaptation of Kamen Rider Black RX though. The premiere battle didn't even come from Black RX at all, instead coming from "Kamen Rider ZO", one of the two movies they did with Kamen Rider in the 90s.

The japanese footage is especially fun to watch here. They recasted Count Dregon & Nefaria so they can speak English lines, but Nefaria is so obviously portrayed by a different woman when all the other monsters are standing in the same shot with her.

I actually watched ZO last week and really enjoyed it. The earliest parts of the film looked like something out of Hollywood and looked better than most of the Rider movies today. Did however start looking cheaper as the film went on. I loved the Neo-lifeform's look. Also a bit of a sucker for stop motion.

And there were 3 movies in the 90's. ZO, J (which also contributed to Masked Rider) and Shin. Shin, I'm saving for last.
 

Here's another favorite of mine that's a real old one but good one. The cast is quite full of faces you may recognize.
 
I'm going to be starting an episode-by-episode retrospective on Saban's Masked Rider. Nothing critical (until I'm done), just random thoughts, observations, jokes and developing a drinking game. Going to start with the three-part Mighty Morphin' arc and see how it develops...or drive's me insane. Either or.
 
I look forward to it, as a Tokusatsu fan.

Unlike V.R. Troopers, Saban's Masked Rider really makes no attempt to maintain anything from its source material. The Power Rangers episodes are kinda bad though, because of the orange tint to give everything an "alien planet" feel.

The only episode that's anything like its Kamen Rider counterpart is that one where the dad and brother get transformed into human bugs.
 
I must have stopped watching MR prematurely, cause the wiki claims footage from Kamen Riders ZO and J was used. But I don't rember seeing that at all.

Rewatching the Voltron: Defenders of the Universe cartoon from the 80s. I haven't seen it since I was a kid and I don't remember Pidge's voice being this annoying.

Still, Sven is and always will be dabes pilot. Allura can go back to the royal kitchen for all I care. :neckbeard:
 
I have a bit of a guilty pleasure for the Super Sentai series, mainly the Showa era instalments such as Maskman and Liveman. Though I like some of the Heisei seasons like Dairanger, Kakuranger, and Gokaiger. They are not my absolute favorite shows, but I can watch and enjoy them without wearing the "Power Ranger" goggles.

Liveman shouldn't be a guilty pleasure. It's one of the best Sentai series, and one of my favorites.

It's most notably used in the 2nd episode, in his fight against the "Destructosphere."

I like Flashman more myself but there isn't enough subbed. But then again, I'm not too big on sentai. Like Kyoryuger and Kakuranger, but the only one I've finished is Jetman.
 
To get things back on topic, I love two kids' shows. Arthur and Blue's Clues. First off, my parents would watch them with me, so that's always a good sign. Second, Steve is hot, and can make khakis work.

The thing with Blue's Clues (other than the effects, which are pretty good, even to this day), is that it didn't talk down to kids. And it would tell the audience that they were awesome and smart. I remember in Mrs. Doubtfire, Robin Williams character was talking about why an educational show that was airing wasn't working, and it was because that it was talking down to kids and patronizing them. Blue's Clues related to kids rather than talk down, and made them want to interact.

Arthur as well didn't talk down to kids. And the writing was really smart. Even as an adult you find the stuff still hilarious. And it teaches kids lessons that aren't heavy-handed, and naturally come out of the journey. Recurring jokes, recurring story elements are constantly brought up giving the show a sense of consistency (DW's snowball, which is probably one of the best episodes, is constantly brought up). And if things changed in an episode (such as Buster living with his father for the rest of the season, Buster getting asthma, Francine getting a cat, Binky discovering he has a peanut allergy, George discovering he has dyslexia) it stays. Which is rare in children's shows and in tv shows in general. Things go back to normal in the next episode.

One of the things I like about Arthur is that each of the kids had different home lives. Arthur was the oldest sibling out of two sisters, and had two parents who both worked out of the house: his mom was an accountant and his father was a caterer (and he did most of the cooking). Buster's parents were divorced and he lived in a town house with his mother, and he only got to see his father once or twice a year. Francine (who has possibly one of the best-written fathers ever) is not as wealthy as the rest of her friends, and lives in a small apartment with her two parents and her teenage sister, putting her at odds with her BFF Muffy who lives in an effing mansion.

I think both shows are awesome, and both of them have fans who grew up with the show, and don't regret watching a few re-runs.
 
I have the first two seasons of The Tick on DVD, as well as the live-action series. I have the first season of Johnny Bravo as well.

Lately, the dvd's of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show at Walmart have been taunting me. Haven't watching it in 20 years but...that was the first TV show I ever liked.
 
I'm 5 episodes in and I think Masked Rider... is actually better than Power Rangers Megaforce. At times, the humor feels constrained and forced out, but when it does allow itself to be goofy it's pretty damn enjoyable.
 
Pssh… #1: People need to stop hating on Megaforce and Super Megaforce. All this is is growing pains coming off the Disney seasons (minus RPM). Times have changed, and people love nostalgia. Megaforce and Super Megaforce is simply trying to cater to that crowd. The pure fact that Gosei totally gave me a real good vibe, indicating he WAS, a pupil of Zordon, was a good thing. I thoroughly enjoyed the premiere of Super Megaforce when I watched it, and I really felt these guys deserved to be the first Rangers since TJ, Carlos, Ashley and Cassie, to star in two Seasons.

People are way too hard on the new Saban era.

Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying Masked Rider. One thing all these shows seemed to need was a "Bulk & Skull" archetype character. VR Troopers had Percy, Beetleborgs had Van & Trip. And here, in Masked Rider, we have Patsy and Herbie. I think Patsy really played this role the best. She is just so goddamn funny to me even today, how she's always such an attention whore, thinks she's the hot shit while hanging out with Herbie the Geek, and thinking "I'm cuter than her, aren't I?" Patsy was pretty, sure, but she sure as heck didn't know how to show it. Instead, dressing up in some bizarre pillbug outfit, simply barging into peoples house to flirt with the son, and so on and so forth.

But anyways, to try again to steer this off from being too much for Tokusatsu, I'll talk about a new recent guilty pleasure of mine. Well, guilty in the sense that its, again, an old Tv Show that which I only watch.

Step by Step, the old TGIF classic, is available to watch on the Hub Network (yes, the same channel that shows MLP:FIM). There was a lot about this show that really charmed me seeing it again as an adult. The opening is beautiful and really well done. For the premise, this did a really good job of showing how all the kids are adjusting to living with one another. Everyone is expressing such great mirth, and we all know I'm a sucker for that. :) I also love a show with a very large cast, and with 6 children, a cousin who lives with them, Mom & Dad, and the in-laws (only in the first season though), this definitely fits that bill. I watched through most of the first Season, before taking a break so I don't burn myself out of this awesome show. As it went on, I eventually concluded to myself that it was Dana Foster, who was that girl I saw on Tv in 1992 who I totally had a crush on, but didn't know what show she was on (just that it was ABC). I am certain of this. Dana's appearance totally matches up with my memories. In all honesty though, Dana is the shit. She's really misunderstood, and that's why she seems like a snarky bitch to everyone. Again, check out her expressions in the opening. All smiles. Special mention goes to Sasha Mitchel (Cody the cousin), who does a great smile after winning a Teddy Bear, I'm only to presume he wants to give it to Dana. Karen Foster really cracks me up, like really. As I mentioned earlier, I love stuck-up female characters, and Karen is just amazing at this. And of course, not to mention Susan Sarandon :heart-full: of Three's Company fame starring alongside the awesome Patrick Duffy. Family Ties is really awesome in its own right, but I really think the Lambert/Fosters really take the cake in "Best Sitcom Family"

God, I'm such a sperg.
