Was reading this nonsense on twitter which is a bit funky relating to Luigi Mangione. Since I'm now a lawyer, not going to pretend I know for certain this explanation makes sense but it feels believable enough.
As I get it relates to 18 U.S.C. § 1111, there's this § 924(j) that I guess helps to upgrade a murder charge to be more serious so they could go after a death penalty for Luigi Mangione. But it basically meant requiring finding he was committing some act of violence which they tried arguing interstate stalking and electronic stalking were violent crimes.
And the judge was just like "the fuck are you on about?".
As it needed physical violence against another person. So Luigi couldn't be charged under this section.
Which is why they had to drop the murder using a firearm charge and charge of using a firearm during a crime of violence.
Now how this relates to Trump, is past January he got all into this idea of the DoJ seeking the death penalty whenever they could, he even named Luigi Mangione while he was signing an executive order on this. So very seriously pressuring his lackey Bondi of the independent agency that is the Department of Justice to go for a death penalty for Luigi using whatever method her inept law skills could muster up.
Resulting in them trying charges that didn't make sense and making the case weaker against Luigi. All because Trump appointed someone incompetent who has the agency do her boss's bidding rather than just do what legally made more sense.
So Luigi is now facing Interstate Stalking (18 U.S.C. § 2261A(1)(A)) and Electronic stalking (18 U.S.C. § 2261A(2)(A)) charges, which seem harder to prove.
I'm checking Chatpt for a summary of them:
So looks like Trump and Bondi bumbling along may have ended up help save our healthcare CEO killer from spending life in prison or dealing with that death penalty due to their desire to virtue signal.
To comment on the Don Lemon thing since it's a hot topic. It does seem again that Trump's DoJ is overcharging so they'll likely lose their case. Be funny though if it helps Don Lemon experience a revival in his career so that a network picks him up again.
