The Neogaf thread on this is hilarious. Some of them are acting like it was a direct request from Trump, bringing up free speech strawmen (the people usually arguing that have long been banned) and trying to equate it to the Access Hollywood sound bite.

This is a forum that loves to claim the average Republican voter is low information. That thread is direct proof that they're really no better. The FCC deals with hundreds, if not thousands, of viewer complaint cases every year. This is only a news story because it relates to a president who publicly rants about the media. Broadcast television (which includes ABC, CBS, CW, Fox and NBC) isn't a platform where free speech is really protected. The FCC has regulated that since its existence. That's why the Access Hollywood audio isn't a comparison. That was a private conversation that got caught on a hot mic 12 years ago. If Trump didn't run for president, that wouldn't have ever been heard of on TV. It was a news story, which the FCC regulates differently. I'd also guess that most of the broadcast networks probably didn't run the audio unedited but instead described what was said in less detail. That's a common thing for them to do. The cable networks (CNN, MSNBC, Fox News) only have to deal with the cable carriers, their internal broadcast standards people and what their advertisers won't object to. They're free to air almost anything. That's why when cable shows and movies run on the broadcast channels you often see heavy changes. Even if the FCC does find Colbert in violation of their regulations (which will probably be years from now), the network will only pay a fine and may have to post an apology.

This FCC fine is nothing. It's not even on the level of when some baseball player goes apeshit and charges the mound.
