I have this feeling it was more of a threat than a buying-off. Like maybe a "Drop out or we'll actually take a look into that whole 'Shadow' thing where you blatantly tried to steal one of the primaries." It's way too abrupt and he was actually doing too well in the numbers for this to be a bribe situation.

The shadow thing feels like a bullshit random connection, since someone had to help pay for the infrastructure for some of these DNC apparatuses, like Bloomberg has been doing quite a bit of himself I think. Buttigieg had skated by with a bit of luck with the way the districting was done plus the fact the state he won quite a few delegates in was mostly white. It probably became both too obvious that blacks wouldn't support a gay guy plus someone offering him a chance at getting at least some decent position in the future if he dropped out. Guy at least has the chance of going on to do something more than being a mayor in the future.

i don't understand why the dems just don't co-opt bernie like they do everyone else. they co-opted yang implicitly by CNN having him host a debate. just assume direct control of bernie, he doesn't mind being thrown under the bus at all. they have everything versus nothing to lose at this point; who's gunna be mad at them, the dying-off blue-dog boomers?

It's not like they have that much control over people like Bernie. The guy is going around with Ilhan Omar who fairly openly hates America while talking shit about AIPAC so that every Jewish donor will get turned off from the party. He's kinda doing his own thing. What the DNC can do is pressure friends they have in various media outlets to talk shit about Bernie to pressure him into doing one thing or another, which hasn't really worked as Bernie still pushes to be labeled a socialist when that does so poorly in polling among voters. So while the DNC could try having Schumer talk to Jimmy Kimmel to get him to do a monologue where he cries about why corporations need to be subsidized so they can continue not providing healthcare, it doesn't mean they can force Bernie to stop acting retarded.

Trump came across as a New York used car salesman, and for a good hour or so made it sound like everyone in attendance was walking off the lot with a good deal. If you want to a return to the stuffy "presidental" who will be "respected" by fellow stuffy world leaders, go for it. But I'll take the used car salesman and the good deal. Trump isn't even the first to do this. Teddy and FDR were the true pioneers of this sort of modern politician.

It used to be that people tuned out the primaries and marginally paid attention during the general election. So you could pander to your base to get the nomination, then pivot to be more centrist and appeal to both sides when everyone's listening.

Now, there's too much coverage to let the primary pandering slide. Too much cable news, too many online sources spamming every single gaff as an outrage story that might sit dormant for months before it resurfaces in someone's feed. Everything alienating thing you say to appease your base is instant opposition ad material; they don't even need to pay for a commercial, trolls and memers will do it for free.

Bernie already defended Communist Cuba and doubled down on it when challenged. He's pandering to a base so extreme he can't avoid similar embarrassments as he goes. And the nomination isn't even locked up yet.

Largely an aside, but the honeymoon thing isn't exactly true. He was actually with some group of government officials of the city of Burlington, Vermont to be friendly with the city of Yaroslavi that was in the then Soviet Union as part of a program done by "Sister City Internaitonal" a non-profit group of the time.

The idea it was a honeymoon came from Sanders writing, likely jokingly, that it was a honeymoon since it happened not that long after he got married. It was like three days after the wedding, so it was sorta a honeymoon, but it was part of a government program so it sorta wasn't a honeymoon.


Idea of the program seems nice and then Sanders has to shoot himself in the foot by not being willing to admit that the critics of the Soviet Union or Cuba or any socialist country could be right that socialism was flawed. Pretty much calling everyone an idiot for daring disagree with his views on socialism. Which you can then contrast with Trump who, at least back in 2016, would routinely defend Bernie and his supporters' views on certain issues to at least give that sense of "hey we're all in this together".
