Former State Legislature member talks about how after voters tossed out the "Give Illegals Driver's Licenses" bullshit, Kate Brown went apeshit on the Emergency Clauses.

Since 1902 the Oregon Referendum has enabled voters to challenge laws passed by Legislators. To exercise this power, thousands of signatures are gathered in a limited time period. Then the proposed law must be placed on a ballot and approved by the voters before it can become law. A recent use of the People’s power of Referendum occurred when citizens opposed Senate Bill 833, a law that granted Driver’s Cards for those in Oregon illegally.

As you may recall Senate Bill 833 passed by a near party-line vote of 38 to 20 and would have become Oregon law had a few dedicated citizens not committed their time and money to fight it. A Referendum battle was fought, sufficient signatures were gathered to take the proposed Driver’s Card bill to the voters and it was soundly defeated 66% to 34%.

To combat future “interference” by voters from stopping the agendas of politically-connected special interests, our legislative leaders have increased the use of the Emergency Clause to prevent voters from using the Referendum.

An Emergency Clause is a provision intended to enable a bill to become law as soon as it is signed by the Governor. It was created to be used only in a time of emergency, when it is vital to implement a new law without delay.

It's SUPPOSED to be solved via compromise, but ever since voters told the blue side to go fuck themselves with that "Illegals get Driver's Licenses so we can count them on the census!" bullshit getting shut down, the Dems have flat out said "Fuck the voters, they don't get their Constitutional right to object" and slapped the Emergency Clause on there to keep the voters in the wrong thinking counties locked out.

This is about waaay more than pair of bills that fucks over everyone but Portland real estate developers and Portland/urban residents, this is about the Dems pushing shit that they KNOW the voters would push down with a referendum.

If the Dems aren't going to play by the rules, refuse to compromise at all, and deny the Oregon voters their Constitutionally mandated rights, then fuck 'em, the GOP is doing EXACTLY what they are supposed to do, and prevent the Dems from passing this shit without a supermajority.

And the fact that Kate Brown send out the fucking State Patrol to round the GOP guys up, when her and the other Dems used this same tactic when they were the minority, then cried "this isn't how we do things!" when the GOP reps flat out stated that she better send lots of cops and might wanna make sure they were bachelors.

The real tell is how when the Dems pulled this shit, they were protecting Democracy, but now that the GOP is doing it, it's "Not how we do things" and warrants armed men dragging legislators from their homes under threat of violence.

Edit: The real thing about the illegals getting counted for the census wasn't the Federal Census, it was all about the State level Census. There was serious fuckery buried in that bill.

Hell, they make a big deal over the walkout being about a bill regarding School Funding but ignores all the bullshit the Dems shoved in there that everyone in Oregon was all "Wait, what now?"

An undergirding principle of American lawmaking is that new laws are not good by default. If a law cannot be passed, it goes unpassed. If it cannot be upheld, it's overturned. Better no law (prevented by a loud minority) than a bad one forced by a slim majority.

The way things are now it basically allows them to throw a tantrum and take their ball and go home because the vote isn't gonna go the way they want it. Again, I'm not singling out either party, I think both the Dems in Wisconsin and the Pubs in Oregon were shitty to do it.

A lot of the Republican presidents or hopefuls are like that. If you've never dug into Ronald Reagan for example, I'd highly recommend it. He was always known for cracking jokes, but my favorite moment had to be when he was giving a speech in Berlin, which was made all the better by the fact that barely a few weeks prior to this speech he'd already been shot in an assassination attempt.
