People that think bad fanfiction only came about in the internet age or is dominated by women aren't familiar with the history of the fantasy genre. A lot of the fantasy genre comes from shit-tier pastiches and fanfictions of Tolkien, Howard, and Lovecraft (or, in extreme and typically much older cases, Lord Dunsany). Whatever magic those authors had- most of their followers sorely lacked.totally called it on James Roberts being inspired by (probably very bad) fanfiction.
Honestly, fanfic is only really a pejorative because so much of it is suspension-of-disbelief-erasing mindfuckery (when it's not just outright poorly conceived and atrociously written with spelling and grammar errors aplenty). The fact that so many bad fanfiction writers just happen to be female doesn't erase the fact that 1) there's bad fanfic writers who are male (coughcoughrobertscoughcough), 2) there are some female fanfic authors who are good or even excellent 3) of course his English degree or whatever drenched him in Postmodern IngSocJus so he's conditioned to think this way. You know he's drunk the purple koolaid when he thinks Marxism is the answer to turning Megatron "good"...
