There have always been the emo/goth contingent who were into painting them black. But in recent years there have been far more men embracing the “gender non-conforming” trend of using nail polish. Artists and creatives. They expand from basic black to other dark colors and sometimes jewel tones.

There are the “dads of daughters” who let their kids paint their nails, and display this as a “look how wholesome I am” badge, as well as the male feminists… they use mail polish as a way to appeal to women. They are advertising that they’re “sensitive” guys.

The “metrosexuals” are more likely to spend time and money on actual nail care, but forgo color in favor of protective gloss coats. Patrick Bateman vanity.

Then there are the flamboyant gays, who embrace nail polish, nail art and more extreme nail lengths. This has been a thing alongside the male makeup enthusiasts and influencers. They keep their nails in impeccable condition, and use nail polish as artistic expression.

Then there are the troons.

They favor pastels and bright colors. Nail polish is just another way to display their flags. They spend no time or effort on maintaining nails that are neat, trimmed or manicured. They slap some polish on their fingers in a sloppy manner, getting it all over their cuticles. Then they just let it chip and peel, adding to the general unkempt look.

Overall, men using nail polish has been a thing for at least 20 years in some demographics. Increasingly so over the past decade though.
