Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 - Activision attempts to redeem itself... again... September 12th

If this does good, think EA gonna try to butt in with Skate 4?

On a semi related note I just realized R* made Thrasher
Pro skater Jason Dill mentioned on a podcast that EA contacted him last year about a mobile port of Skate 3 and he told them to "fuck off and make Skate 4".

IDK if Skate 3's mobile port was an actual mobile port, or a code word for a Skate 3 port to new consoles, or what, but much like Tony Hawk and Neversoft, Skate's devs Black Box were shut down.

At that point in time, Vicarious Visions had worked on various ports for the Tony Hawk series. However these games where either on weaker hardware or portable systems. I'd say the most notable work was them making SK8TELAND for the DS, which took the themes of American Wasteland and heavily stylised them to be more comic. Heavy line work, flat shading. I dug it.

Problem is that THUG and THAW implemented adjustments to the physics that had been present since THPS3. It's why if you go back and play THUG, many people consider it "floaty" compared to the rigged nature of the THPS games. I think that is in part due to them allowing you to dismount the board.

The interview they had indicates that they have the source code for THPS1. But as seen with the Crash ports they made, they'll likely brute force everything to be around one engine.

A dev team that also has history with the Tony Hawk code is "Toys for Bob" who'd go on to make the Disney Skateboarding game for PS2. I wouldn't be shocked if they take the reigns of 3/4 HD whilst they have Vicarious Visions prioritise a new Crash project.

For those who didn’t play Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, like me, this game was a nice alternative.

I was a little kid when I played Pro Skater 3, so the only song I remember with any clarity is Blitzkrieg Bop (probably because Jimmy Neutron had just come out).

What's fucking with me though is that I swear Good Charlotte was on the soundtrack but I can't find anything about it and it's driving me crazy. I can't have just imagined it, but it just isn't there. I didn't even remember Ace of Spades being on the soundtrack and that was one of my favorite songs in high school.

Didn't Good Charlotte have their 15 minutes of fame around '02/'03, which was around the same time that THPS4/THUG came out, so you're probably misremembering it from one of those games.

I didn't even play those games though. I know my older siblings listened to a lot of Good Charlotte back then which is probably where I picked it up, but I could have sworn I first heard The Anthem playing Pro Skater 3, which was also where I heard Blitzkrieg Bop for the first time. I guess my memory's just mashing shit together.

I didn't see it anywhere but are the secret skaters making a return? I wanna assume the position.

Do overly gamey skateboarding titles even have a place in the cultural landscape anymore? It seems to me like the trend has been shifting towards more realistic simulations, like Skate and the recent PC title, Session.

Tony Hawk can still appeal to the "classic arcade" crowd, which isn't going away any time soon.

Sure it isn't the biggest audience but it's better than nothing.

The new sim skating games fill a different niche, so I can see them both being successful.

The Tony Hawk games are more video gamey, and have specific goals and scores and such. These games are closer to Mario style platformers than actual skateboarding, making them accessible and fun to the average player. The videos that are usually made with the Tony Hawk games are often super high score runs and speedruns of the old games.

The 2 new indie simulator games, Skater XL and Session, are free-form skating sims. There are no goals and no scoring systems. They have less intuitive and more grounded controls. This makes them less accessible to the average player, but the difficulty emulates real skateboarding, which is about trying the same trick over and over again until you perfectly nail it. Both of the indie sim games have large communities that make really impressive looking skate videos using the replay editors, custom maps based on real spots and Tony Hawk levels, and have even formed teams.

I can't wait to see the sales numbers after the first month and see how it compares to Nintendies' skateboard game with birds. :story:

it and jet set radio have a very distinct 90's arcade feeling that isn't really flooding the industry right now, unfortunate that sega has their thumb up their ass rn on alot of shit

For the near photorealism this generation of games produces the graphics don't seem that impressive. Also, maybe something to do with neversoft, it just doesn't feel like THPS1+2, the aesthetic is different, looks generic.
Yeah, Neversoft's Tony Hawk games always had a juvenile edge to them. You're always either breaking something or messing with someone, and there's usually the number 69 hidden somewhere in the level. Robomodo, and possibly VV are missing this.

But will I be able to remove the game disc after the level has loaded and put in a music CD of my choice to listen too while playing? The soundtrack is bad ass, but you can only llisten to the same 13 songs for so long.
I used to do this with original Ridge Racer, and it wasn't just the level that loaded, it was the whole game... My favourite memory was driving round to In Utero or Antichrist Superstar

edit: Once you loaded it up you could give your mates a free game until they turned it off...

The best discs for Ridge Racer were Astrocreep 2000 by White Zombie, which had perfect timing on track one for the advanced reverse race (The intro to Electric Head Part 1 ends and the song starts in earnest just as you reach the point where the black diablo starts racing against you) and Xtort by KMFDM, which by pure chance matched the track layout of the Ridge Racer disc well enough to be able to leave the music set to shuffle and never have any gaps or silent races.
