If you want to see a very honest view of World War II in manga, give Shigeru Mizuki's various World War II works a read, like Showa: A History of Japan, Onward to Our Noble Deaths, and War and Japan. Mizuki is primarily famous for creating GeGeGe no Kitaro, a very long running franchise about yokai, but also actually served in the war and lost an arm in the process. The whole experience affected him greatly and he's never minced words about it.

Onward to Our Noble Deaths is really good. It is a shame that many war manga doesnt get translated, they have so much material.

I'm pretty casual with manga, but I did enjoy Dorohedoro a whole lot. The humor is pretty retarded, but it just kind of works. Plus the artwork is pretty great. Would recommend.
