The Shin Megami Tensei/Persona Thread

Reading through the thread has made me increasingly pessimistic to this remake. It's well-known that people were underwhelmed with The Answer but that part of FES was the most ripe for a second try at the scenario that a remake can give. This was also a chance for the players who enjoyed the female path in P3P to get their chance at a fully 3D Persona. It would be very disappointing if these features of the previous games were removed so Atlus could further nickel-and-dime P3 fans over the next couple of years.
This has been floating around Twitter recently, and its got people up in arms and and swearing off buying P3. For those who don't know, the account in the picture belongs to a troon is one of those "localizers" who likes to censor and rewrite the dialogue, and he is very infamous for it on Twitter, as he is quite vocal. Apparently, this person openly complained about the last Persona release, actually quit Sega before and went on to grandstand about it on Twitter, yet Sega/Atlus has apparently hired them to work on P3R as the chief localization engineer.
If a troon is attached to the localization that is a kiss of death for the dialogue and story in the English version.

Altus is missing out on a good marketing tactic right now. They could've done the Pokemon thing and have two releases of the same game one with the male MC and one with FEMC. Easy way to double the amount of sales.

honestly never understood people bitching about the "less story content"

if you just meant The Answer, maybe i'm alone here but I thought The Answer fucking sucked and wasn't really necessary plot wise?

I'm curious to see how P3R works gameplay wise, because like P5 or not, it is the best in the series gameplay wise story wise it's just a remix of 4 but worse in every way.

i would honestly love to see someone make the argument that Tartarus is better than the P5 palaces and I don't mean that in a smug "try to make this argument, you can't" I mean it in a genuine I have no idea how someone could think that and I'd like to see the reasons for it.

The Answer was very mediocre and a huge slog gameplay wise. The 2v2 battles were neat but not very good.

I would argue that P4 had better gameplay than P5. P5's pacing was awful and the palaces very frequently went on way too fucking long. The combat stuff was nice but didn't change the flow enough where I suddenly wanted to do hours of Persona battles (the problem with The Answer as well). Not being able to fight the boss at the end of the dungeon until -THE APPOINTED TIME- wasn't very fun either.

Story wise it was just less interesting to deal with the villians. Every palace boiled down to "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS VILLAIN BELIEVES THESE EVIL THINGS - We're going to change his heart for sure!".

You also wouldn't compare Tartarus to P5's dungeons - you'd compare Tartarus to P5's Mementos, in which it's way better by virtue of being not nearly as long or shitty.

you'd compare Tartarus to P5's Mementos

i was comparing tart to the palaces because tart is the main story place. Mementos is, for the most part, optional, until the end where you can speed through it.

i think P5 did more gameplay wise than just combat stuff, things like ability bonuses from Social links (were those in P4 vanilla?) getting to choose inheritance abilities from personas, the lil sidequests and side stories that unfurl throughout the game, like the girl stalking the guy at school. while you may feel the dungeons went on too long, i do think they're easily a step above say, the P4 dungeons, which were just "we reskinned a buncha hallways to match the theme, now find some stairs."

don't get me wrong, I don't think Persona 5 is just the standard of all persona games and everyone should love it. I think the story was pretty weak and had pacing issues as you said, like the weird escalation of threats from "I'm molesting kids and one tried to commit suicide to escape me" to "i make people homeless by stealing their work and btw i killed someone through inaction intentionally"

but I still honestly feel that if you took P5's gameplay and graphics, and slapped it over P3, you'd have a better game than P5 and original P3.

so i don't see this remake as a total disaster like some others apparently do.

Most sidequests and nearly every social link are locked behind Mementos progression so I'd say it's technically optional but the most efficient use of it is to try and grind as much of it as you can in a single day.

Palaces + Mementos was entirely too much I feel and puts way too much weight onto the combat side of the persona formula.

Tartarus is a lot better IMO because it's much simpler, much better gated, and much faster to get through. If P3 had huge, gigantic palaces as the "end of the month" events instead of extremely short dungeons with specific bosses then it would probably also feel like too much.

Tartarus also had a lot more minibosses whereas Mementos took the route of just having them be normal enemies/personas with a possible small variation.

P5 dungeons did the same thing for the most part - which is why the theming felt so half assed for me. In the first dungeon (a castle) you would ambush a huge walking suit of armor but the battle would be vs 2 faeries and a nekomata. I'm not sure why they stopped having specific dedicated enemies but it made the combat even more humdrum because you almost always knew what enemies were weak to (because you have them as personas).

P4 dungeons aren't pinnacles of game design, but the length and depth felt way better than P3 or P5 did - with a much better story hook on top of it. I never felt like "Holy fuck when is this going to be over" in a P4 dungeon where as in P5 it felt that way nearly every single time.

P4Vanilla had ability bonuses from Social Links - although limited to party members (also Rank 1 was "will take a mortal blow for you" in P4V which got moved to Rank 9 in every other version).

P4G was when you could directly choose inheritance from fusion.

It's fair to say that P4 was "too little" and P5 was "too much" so hopefully they can strike a balance with P3R and the eventual P6.

Might be late to the party on this one, don't really care, but it answers a question from the Persona Reveals from earlier this month - P5 Tactics is on the Playstation Store for preorders. Considering it's reveal only mentioned Xbox and PC, I'm assuming that's confirmation that Atlus was, in fact, too lazy/cheap/retarded to make a second trailer. That or Microsoft is throwing around it's Fuck You Money to get exclusive advertising.

Odds still go either way on P3R being a simultaneous release or delayed release, considering that one's a bigger deal, but fuck knows with Atlus...

The only game confirmed to be multiplat is Tactica, and that was confirmed when it was shown in the Nintendo Direct. There's been nothing to indicate anything about P3 remake coming to anything besides PC.

actually, I'm sure that most people have brought it up already.....but where the FUCK are 1 + 2? You'd think they'd do all 5 in one fell swoop - the PSP remakes of 1 and 2, plus the 3 already released - 3P, 4G, and 5R. But no. Apparently Atlus are just as retarded as SEGA.

Ah, didn't watch the Direct so I missed that. Oh well - I'm still hedging my bets and saying 6 Month exclusivity deal, but that's optimism and the fact I've wanted a P3 remake for years and am fine waiting a bit longer to see if it comes to my console of choice before I finally just invest in a proper PC.

I half remember hearing something about not wanting to touch the original creator's work, but honestly at this point I think it's just because those games aged horribly and would get the censorship hack job from hell to be made appealing to Current Year.

For P1, there's enough video's on it's terrible localization, so I'm just going with the first one that pops up. Proof that unnecessary Race Swaps unfortunately aren't a recent fad.

As for P2, do I really need to say why that game wouldn't make the jump?

Yeah I doubt Atlus would get away with "Hitler in Shades" again.

They also have different messages and gameplay loops.

Persona 3/4/5 can be summed up as "the power of friendship" - you and your friends saving the day and every social link being your main character solving someone else's problems.

Persona 1/2 have a strong throughline of "You have to let people solve their own problems because those struggles are what cultivate inner strength" - Persona 1 will penalize you for leaving people behind or letting people make sacrifices. Persona 2 will lock party members out of Ultimate Personas if you intervene in their problems.

It's also a different setting. Persona 3/4/5 has a cast of school age kids because Persona 3/4/5 has a rule that Personas have an "age limit" (unless you are given the ability directly from God). Persona 1/2 do not have this restriction so the party members and enemies can be much older and still have personas.

You can absolutely do a P1/P2 remake - you just have to throw out the first localization and do a pass where you remove swastikas and other explicit real world references such as (sadly) Hitler and the Spear of Destiny. It wouldn't be a big deal because Hitler is a silly reference and not like a central character in the game.
