I kind of liked Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. He was believable as a spergy super-genius millennial CEO, it's just that they were never going to make enough movies to turn him into a believable comic strip Lex. In the same token I think they should have cast someone young as Batman who'd actually see it as a privilege/career move instead of another job.
I really don't know what they're doing with Joker, at this point I think DC is going full on fuck cinematic universe continuity.
I get what Eisenberg was going for, I just thought he did a terrible job in delivering it. There's also the fact that Lex is now about as iconic as Superman, especially with fans of the comics or hell even Smallville. To change the character so much was just a bad idea. Broad shouldered, brooding, almost magically intelligent and persuasive Lex is like the ultimate foil to Superman. Campy and goofy is not a good fit.
Regarding continuity, yes I think Geoff Johns mentioned that they're going to parade out some new label for random DC movies that don't tie into their main universe. My guess is so that if audiences don't respond well to Aquaman, Shazam, and Wonder Woman 2, and Man of Steel 2 doesn't come along and/or Battfleck implodes in a bad way, they can go back to making standalone movies like The Dark Knight again and give up the dream of ever competing with Marvel. They already axed the Black Adam and Cyborg movies, and I think they've put a tighter leash on whoever is working on Birds of Prey.
