it was a rebellion against the Party
The sex could've been a one-time thing and it would've still had the same "breaking-taboos" impact on the narrative. Doing it over and over and taking up half the book with it felt gratuitous... especially since the act of interpersonal love was also seen as contrary-to-the-revolution and love can be expressed in ways other than sex. (I get that winston and julia weren't actually in love, but even infatuation can be non-sexual)

Handmaid's Tale is porn. It's literally porn. Atwood wrote the entire thing with one hand in her pants.
If you watch the 90s film, it feels more like it than this version. And that's the reason the fans of the current version don't like it.

For starters, Natasha Richardson was Offred. There is no comparison between Natasha Richardson and that uggo playing the current Offred.

how could anyone hate this? its literally so close to the modern groyper ideology "your body, my choice!"

Handmaid's Tale became popular so women can have their own brand of dystopian victimisation. There is no depth to it like in other classic works, it's masturbatory victimhood for women.

>1984
>looks inside
>half of it is sex
>none of it advances the plot in any way

>Brave New World
>looks inside
>30% sex
>70% worldbuilding about the sex
1984 at most has 5% sex. Both works have the topic of intimacy be at a cornerstone of the dystopia.

1984 is how intimacy between couples and family is impossible when the government invades every corner of your life.

Brave New World is how intimacy is outright destroyed by government and technology dissolving the family unit and normalizing sex as the only point of interaction.

How did this show last so long? Is it just seasons of women sitting around crying about Trump forcing them to breed with MAGA chads?
yes
Pretty much all of Handmaid's Tale TV series.

Every plot arch goes like this:
*Elizabeth Moss stares into the camera and her voiceover has some super deep internal monologue*
*good guys devise some MacGyver-level plan to bring down Gilead, FOR REAL THIS TIME*
*since the good guys are literal feminists and soyboys, shit goes to hell in a hurry*
*Elizabeth Moss stares into the camera wondering how she can lose when she is on the right side of history*
Next episode:
"Previously, on the Handmaid's Tale"
*Elizabeth Moss stares into the camera and her voiceover has some super de...*

I just saved you 60 hours of TV viewing, you're welcome.

What 1984 did you read? There was one distinct sexual encounter presented in the novel -- in the countryside -- and the other ones which were implied to one extent or another in the rented room in the shop. The sexual relationship functions to symbolize resistance against the Party’s control over desire, intimacy, and reproduction.

It's mirrored in history when you examine how authoritarian regimes viewed those things to be controlled and purely used to further the state's goals. The only thing as predictable in authoritarian regimes as control over sex is the accompanying cult surrounding death. Makes perfect sense to be in 1984.

Anyway, The Handmaid's Tale is awful no matter the medium and I can't name a single Atwood effort I've ever enjoyed. It's for white liberal women and people like Null.

They also expect you believe that racist Gilead elite wanted to train the main character’s mulllatto daughter to be a future wife for a commander (like why the fuck would some random soldier who gets promoted accept some ugly Sheboon as their wife)

I like how in the novel's framing device (an academic historical conference about Gilead and other dystopian successor states in the post-apocalypse era), it's basically stated that the Resistance movement failed and became little more than an obscure historical footnote. The main character never went on to be mythologized as a martyr or hero or even a historical figure. Despite extensive cross referencing of the spotty historical records and primary sources that survived, the lecturer can't even exactly confirm the main character's identity, being only able to narrow it down to 2-3 possible candidates.

And how the lecturer's presentation of the main character's secret diary isn't even the highlight of the academic conference.

It's like Margaret Atwood already knew way back then that no1curr

Sounds like the Feminist version of the Turner Diaries.

It’s how middle age, white, suburbanite, out of shape women, picture areas in America that vote red.

They all believe people like me, are going to lift up their mommy belly, while I stare at their “Jaden is my king” tattoo which coincidentally sits mere inches from their “house huffle puff” tattoo

As if either of those things are nearly as bad as the smell, I’ll some how produce an erection, and proceed to fuck their beat to shit arbys sandwich looking failure of a vagina while my attractive wife holds them gently.

All so I can get their biological equivalent to a taco bell dumpster body pregnant.

Fucking madness.

Well I didn't like it before but it sounds kind of hot when you put it that way.

The IRL book club I'm in (gay, I know) is reading this for April's meeting. The theme of said book club is speculative fiction, which means we usually read sci-fi and fantasy. I've never read the book or seen the show and I'm considering skipping that meeting altogether. The club has a strong liberal/lefty slant but it never gets too obnoxious beyond occasional complaints about the way some women are written in some books.

They 100% purged the racist elements from Gilead, sue to the implications of families refusing fertile minority women. One episode even has a commander with a literal Benetton ad full of mixed race kids from the different races of handmaids he had.
