Went fishing off a friends dock and caught a decent size fish (for the area). Proof using actual worms is better than the fake and gay plastic shit

I think there are situations and presentations where either is apparent and obviously much more effective than the other. Nice bass though man for real.

Also anyone, should this thread be in the self sufficiency board?

The Salmon are starting to run in the great lakes region. I didnt manage to catch any this weekend but theyre definitely starting to head up river. In a few weeks rhe rivers should be packed. I got skunked but my buddy managed to catch some small brown/rainbow trout on some jigs with wax worms. 20240727_104842.jpg

I don’t like plastic bait because I don’t like its effect on the environment. If a fish swallows it it can’t digest and if you loose it in the water there’s now junk in the water. I’m aware of the practical benefits of plastic bait but using actual worms is just better for the environment

If you want to use a more environmentally friendly product, Berkeley gulp baits are biodegradable. I can't speak for the effect they have on fish who swallow them, but my friend's cat at an entire package worth of the 3 inch minnows once, it's shit was bright yellow and orange for a day afterwards, but otherwise the cat seemed to experience no other issues.

i'm going to necro this thread but is important. i have no experience fishing whatsoever but i want to get into it as a hobby or find friends with similar interests like me

how do i get into fishing and what can i use for a retard like me
It all starts with a hook and a worm.

Im going to omit some details so this post isnt super long, but for a general catch all set up you should get a 6'6" or 7" medium light action spinning rod, and a 2000-2500 sized spinning reel. Ugly stik for the rod brand and pfleuger president for the reel, they're cheap but premium enough that they will last you a long time.

If you want details on line and baits just let me know, but this rod set up can handle catching most freshwater fish small and medium sized (larger fish like Northern Pike, Catfish, Muskellunge you'll want a different set up- can be caught on smaller gear if you know what you are doing and there is wiggle room dependent on these larger species's size as well).

It is more environmentally friendly but I wouldn't say it's "better" fishing wise, worms catch a lot of dinks and panfish steal your bait often. In the river though you can often catch much bigger fish on worms as panfish aren't nearly as prevalent, at least in my neck of the woods. Live minnows are good but large minnow species like suckers die quickly in these hot summer months/warm water and are better suited for fall and spring fishing.

Another reminder to keep my gulp far away from my cats. Bless those furballs but damn they are not always bright.

Right now is probably the worst time for fishing. After everything is mostly iced out, but there isnt quite enough ice to go ice fishing yet, save for a few select lakes. Since the Lions have bye in the playoffs I decided to spend the weekend out on the ice and in the shanty. Unfortunately most of my time was spent trying (and mostly failing) to find good ice. Fortunately for me I happen to live next to one of these lakes in my area that actually has enough ice to support my fat ass. I zeroed in on the one spot in the lake that had weeds and wasnt just a sand bottom, and this is what I caught (I caught other smaller ones, these were just the ones I bothered to photograph and send to my brother who had literally just packed up and left because he wasnt catching anything and he was hungy) All on wax worms and a golden teardrop tungsten ice jig.

I can't wait for it to get warmer. so. fucking. bad.
Do you think states that require a fishing license are more well looked after than states that don't? I always wonder about that. $20 ain't much but I know places like MD's harbor suffered due to overfishing.
My state requires one and the freshwater fishing is ASS. I wouldn't know jack about the saltwater fishing from my own experience since I don't like saltwater fishing. But I hear it's boiled ass too.

From what I've seen some of the best fishing is in states that also have a portion of the state sales tax go to their wildlife department. even if it's only 1/100th of a penny on sales tax, it increases the budget massively.

Love the profile pic. Allegedly all my states license funds support restoration, conservation, management and enhancement of sportfish. What good it has done is questionable. I feel like money can leak through the cracks. Gov related things tend to be corrupt too. I wouldn't be surprised if money going to the wrong places could explain the horrible state of things. As for other ways they could get money... Well I would not be surprised if they are underfunded.

It also just has to do with the fact that theyre the government. When the govt comes knocking for good and services the price skyrocktets by thousands and thousands of dollars. I have been around city governments enough to hear the prices theyre charged for stuff, an example, a city needed solar panels for their parking meters to "go green" (all that means is they put a lithium battery and a solar panel on it) we were charged thousands per panel, after that I check on amazon and seemingly the same panels are on there for like 35 bucks. Some money does trickle down to conservation with natural resource law enforcement agencies but the majority of it goes to buying them ghille suits and side-by-sides so they can spy on you and your kid fishing at the local pond and ticket you for keeping a bass thats 14.9" because they changed the measuring rules that state you do or dont squeeze the tail when measuring. Natural resource law enforcement officers arent that different from regular police officers, the only major difference is that the DNR officers are generally slightly angier because they havent had a hunting/fishing season off in several years and thats the entire reason they became an resource officer. Sorry for derailing the thread slightly but theres not much going on in here anyways.

I think it depends on area, to be honest, since I live in rural midwest, most of us fish and hunt, so we take very good care of our areas, but that very ingrain in our culture.

My attempt to get into fishing has been an expensive boondoggle so far. I tried fishing a bit in college and had no luck with it at all. I get to thinking, years later, that if I learn to kayak then I can kayak out to fishing spots on the water, and I do learn to kayak, but then I don't do anything with fishing. But eventually I decide to try to force myself, and I know that my horrible failure stems from not learning enough about fish or going after them in the right way.

Big thing is I have a fishing pole already. But the first day I go out, I lose it. I think I propped it against my car as I was loading my gear back in and then drove off without it and it was stolen. So I have to go out and buy a whole new pole. And as I'm doing this I'm learning, through trial and error, that there are different lines for different fish, different lines for different fishing poles. I had to spool the fucking thing myself, which I think I did more or less correctly. And then the kicker is that the end of all of this I wind up looking it up and find that the specific fish I was going to go after (catfish) is inedible out of the lake I live on because of some industrial fuckery from back in the day. I wanted to go after catfish because I actually eat that. It's expensive, and so it's the one thing that would be attractive to, every now and then, take home as a prize.

I've had a horrible time in the past trying to fish for panfish in parks overrun with turtles.

No Kemosabe, your failure stems from you trying to force it. Fishing is like shitty if you try too hard you're gonna get a hernia. Fishing is supposed to be relaxing, somewhat. At the stage you're at you need 3 lures/rigs. You need a wakcy rigged senko, a spoon in the color of your choosing, and a stereotypical bobber live bait rig. Those 3 should cover your bases pretty good in terms of what you can catch and ease of use. Or better yet find a fishing buddy and tie on whatever he has tied on or recommends. Either way, relax and have fun, thats the whole point of it. Youre not Santiago from old man and the sea, yet. Just remember theres a reason its called FISHING and not CATCHING.

Went fishing with a buddy I haven't seen in a while. We caught like 20 fish. Mostly largemouth (the lake's overpopulated with them) with one crappie and a bluegill. My favorite catch was this tiny little 4-inch bass. Burst out laughing when I pulled it out of the water.
