I still want to go squidfishing once but the nearest spot that's feasible is like 3 hours of driving away.
It's a lot of fun though, especially if you get species that are big mad strong. The way they pull feels like the heavy pressure of flatfish. I don't think very large ones are good eating as anything other than fried calamari rings but the little normal ones are perfectly tasty cooked all kinds of ways. In some coastal Korean towns they slice freshly caught common squid into very thin strips and enjoy them like noodles, but you'd need to catch them in very clean waters.

Most out door stores will have people that can help walk you through getting the basic stuff set up. Some advice I wheats give people new to fishing is to have a pair of leather gloves to wear when taking the fish off the hook because the spins on the fishes fins can be prickly and make it hard to take them off the hook for beginners. Also if you’re just catching small stuff in a lake don’t use one of those hooks that have a fake plastic bait on them, they suck and never work nearly as well as actually worms.

mhm interesting, thanks for the helpful tips man

My most shameful catch last summer: the smallest walleye I have ever caught.
I was fishing with my friend on his pontoon boat when something hit the little ice fishing rod I baited with a small piece of nightcrawler. (I put it out for perch and panfish).
I thought it was a shad or something but it turn out to be a tiny juvenile walleye. For size comparison there's the wristband of my watch.
Note: I apologize for the quality, my friend didn't zoom in properly.

Fortunately, we caught some nice smallmouths and rock bass later on that trip. I will not post the pictures because there's no way to edit me out of them.

I like dinks.

Near Lake Ontario. I usually go north for ice fishing, but I think this year I'd have to go quite a bit more north than usual. It's barely been below zero for a whole week all winter.
Go east instead of north; try the Bay of Quinte.
I used to live there and the ice fishing there is phenomenal; the best walleye fishing there is.
I talked to my friend a week ago and they said that the ice there is thick and firm.
They have already caught some nice walleye and perch this year.

That said, perch, walleye, pike, and trout/salmon are still active during this time.
Look up the stocking data and find a place with stocked trout.

Thanks for the info! I have family east of Quinte. You'd think that would mean I'd fish there a lot, but instead I'm usually too busy with family stuff when I go east to bother with fishing.

Here's the navionics chart of the BoQ.
Good luck on your next trip! Post some pictures when you get back!

EDIT: Your relatives east of Quinte don't happen to be living in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, no?

Thank you! I will definitely post pics of anything worth sharing. My family is farther east than that, but not as far as Cornwall. Are you from Tyendinaga?
No, but many of the Mohawks went to the same high school as myself and some of my friends in high school were Mohawk.
If you have time, I would also recommend taking a detour to Lake on the Mountain at Glenora. It is just a ways off from Picton in Prince Edward County. I have gone fishing there in the summer and caught bass but my friend told me that in winter, the ice forms quickly and you can ice fish it as well. Never tried it myself though.

Thanks! You're a wealth of information! I've only been to Picton in the summer (for the sandbanks, of course) if I get time before the ice melts I'll check out Lake on the Mountain.

I'm waiting for a Walmart near me to restock like an addict. I wanna be there when they first get the fishing stuff in. Waiting around the corner as they restock, looking into the boxes. With a raspy whisper I will ask "Got any minnows?" with bloodshot bugged eyes. If the staff restocking doesn't think I'm smoking them then I have done something wrong.

I haven’t fished since I was a kid but I’m getting back into it and got a cheap GX2 6’6” medium power spinning combo. Caught my first ever bass and it’s actually a lot of fun! I never understood why people liked bass fishing but I think I get it now. Now I wanna get a proper bass baitcasting rod and reel. Gotta get some rods for catfishing and an ultralight setup too!
