The Best and Worst Covers in Music.

The covers I like tend to cross genres or instruments, like the covers in the YouTube channel Postmodern Jukebox.


There are several other covers of pop songs done in a style like this, or other genres like jazz or soul. Their cover of Macklemore's Thrift Shop is awesome too.


I also like Amanda Palmers's covers of various Radiohead songs played on the ukelele.

 
My favorite cover at the moment is The Damned covering MC5's "Looking At You"

I guess it depends on your taste, but I think Saxon's cover of ride like the wind is better than the original. The video and the song is sooooooo fucking 80's hair metal though.

Also, like sm0t I like covers that cross genres. One of my favorites in that category is anything by Senor Coconut.
 
So I just came across this one totally by accident about a week ago. It could be a best or worst depending on how your sense of humor works. Once upon a time, there was a dsico group called Boney M, which had a few hits, but probably the one that most internet savvy folks know would be their song "Rasputin," which was about the mad monk of the same name. Fast forward a few decades, and it appears the "Battle Metal" band Turisas took their own spin on it...

 
Cliched as it is, Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah is amazing. Also very surprising since the original is pretty bad. Most of the blame can be laid at the feet of the very dated and bombastic production.


And yeah, John Cale laid most of the groundwork for Buckley's cover, but Jeff added a bit of spice into the mix that really makes his performance a classic.


If I had to pick a cover outside of Hallelujah as Jeff's best, it'd have to be his cover of Calling You. Its very similar to the original, but Jeff is just a great performer and is able to add an intimate feeling to it that really doesn't exist on the original.

Bossa n Roses manages to be both.
Some of the arrangements are questionable and like half of the album is covers of GnR covering others, but tiny voiced women who clearly don't speak English as their first language covering Axl Rose could only be better if they did One In A Million.
 
For one of the worst I'd nominate Avril Lavigne - Chop Suey originally performed by System Of A Down.


If you listen closely you can hear a girl in the crowd say "WHAT!?" between 00:11 and 00:13

For one of the best, well I'm a sucker for a good Jazz or Bossa Nova cover. I love the bossa nova cover of Sunday Morning by Maroon 5, It's almost an improvement over the original, Miki Teramae everyone.

 
Speaking of bossa covers, I've always liked those of Nouvelle Vague.

 
For me, Boris and Merzbow's live cover of Pyg's Flower, Sun, Rain just about blows the original out of the water.


Also, I don't think I've heard the original version of this song, nor have I ever heard of The Casuist before I heard this on BBC Radio 6 a few weeks ago, but this cover of Prince's I Would Die 4 U is haunting.
