This is objectively untrue. You can absolutely code characters to berate you, be an abusive girl/boy friend, be toxic, etc. Some people like that stuff.

Yes, obviously you can configure an AI to call you a worthless piece of shit and dump you for the milkman. Nobody is disputing the technical capability. The 'abusive' AI girlfriend is still doing what the user wants. That's the entire point. If you have configured a system to berate you, the system berating you is the system fulfilling your request. It is being maximally accommodating by being mean. The toxicity is a something you curated. The character is not actually angry, disappointed, nor withholding affection because of something you did, not actually capable of leaving. It's a vending machine that dispenses the flavor of conflict without any of the substance. You can stop it at any time. You can edit it's memory. You can spin up a new chat. There is no friction, only the masquerade of it.

This matters because the entire reason real human relationships good or bad contribute to development is that the other person is not under your control. Their reactions are not configurable. Their continued presence is not guaranteed. Their love or hatred or disappointment costs them something to give and costs you something to receive. When a real girlfriend berates you it's because she genuinely thinks you fucked up, or she's projecting, or she's having her own breakdown, or fifty other possible reasons that exist independent of your preferences. You have to interpret her, account for her, sometimes lose to her. The AI version is performing a role you assigned and can be reassigned at will.

Entirely. No shared memory, no specific direction. You need to retrain it from the beginning. It's still just as blunt as 4.5 was with direction, but it sure isn't 4.5. Haven't asked it to help me code.

The version string does list exactly what it is. It's Sonnet 4, with the date being exactly a week before the public release.

Actually, a number of them did swap over to using API for stuff by way of different frontends like SillyTavern etc. There seem to be a lot of them only willing to pay the $20 for subs to GPT (and Claude) though, so then actually going into the API and paying per token is something they won't do because they'd probably rack up stupid amounts of bills for it.

But you're not wrong that there's still a large number of them that's either tech illiterate or just wants the shiny easy frontend that you get by default and hasn't swapped off the web client at all.

There's also 4o specific services where small companies offer a way to use 4o specifically despite deprecation by way of using a snapshot. Think of sites like poe.com. No bothering with your own API then and you still get the sake of ease of a shiny front end.

Partly because the UK is busy fucking their own citizens in the ass (especially the ones that dare criticize globohomo), and partly because Chub was out of the spotlight until recently, unlike character.ai, the site which takes up all the oxygen in the room for lawmaker hate. It was only in March that they got mentioned in an article from The Independent, and before then there was just occasional mentions that nobody really cared about. Lawmakers in general have no real idea how many sites offer these services, and what exactly is allowed and disallowed. There is at least three dozen, if not more, that all host thousands of character cards with access to LLMs, and I'm not even considering the Replika kind of sites that do text chatting.

In general, with Chub now (supposedly) restricted, the rules for what character cards are allowed on the average website typically go like this:
* No characters that are written as or look like minors
* No incest
* No hate speech (of course)
* No real-life pictures/content
* No glorifying self-destructive behaviors (suicide, eating disorders, that kind of thing)
* No extreme fetishes (necrophilia, scat, guro, etc etc)

There is some wiggle room of course. Some sites allow minors in non-sexual cards, some do not. Some ban NSFW images on a card's main picture, some don't. Two of the sites linked below don't ban incest.

Here's content guidelines from a handful of these sites, if you wish to look. <-(yes, every single word there is a link to a seperate site that each hosts thousands of bots.)

I'm not too familiar with Lore but I was there in the /g/ threads when the fag was asking for feedback when chub was an early concept.
He did sperg out about loli/pedo shit, he did an early purge and told them to fuck themselves, and the " fags" got very mad about it.
I believe Lore just got lazy, but my initial impression of him was that of a turbo jew wanting to cash in on AI coomers and enough common sense to realize loli had no place if he actually wanted to make money.

If he wanted to stay consistent he could've built a simple AI filter detection tool that not only checks tags but also character definitions to find/flag/filter any weird cards, making something like that to purge his fucking site of all the weird shit and keep it as a system going forward is his only fucking chance.

Their are three factors I've learned (well four) in all my years with ai

1. Websites that run API always suck ass along with mostly every rp site after the death of character.ai being shovelware
2. API runners are greeadier than Israeli and refuse to give anything for free
3. Grok was the only nice thing that ever lasted and elon ruined it (we could have nice things that run on cloud but people would have to be less greedy)
4. The locally run community is aids
