If you want an AI visual novel SillyTavern has a VN mode and support for characters with expressions. I think "digital dates" is more like having your robot girlfriend accompany you in Roblox or Fortnite or whatever.

Going back to fiction for a moment, I seem to recall the film Her (2013) has a guy wearing a smartphone in his vest pocket with the camera exposed so his AI girlfriend can "go out" with him.
I do think there's a big difference between "This is my AI girlfriend" and "this is an interactive erotic text generator." I will say I think it's hard to find the boundary.

Close...but something that can actually learn new controls/game mechanics and react in a way that isn't limited to a static number of lines in a textfile or images on a sprite-sheet.

Gamedevs could certainly optimize virtual interfaces for AI players (along with clearly marking any active AI users, hopefully!) but you can't possibly tell me that in 2025 it's not possible for a potential wAIfu to screen-scrape a text adventure or connect to a virtual keyboard/mouse and be Player 2 on your Switch emulator.

100% correct. If you're tied to a system where all the input comes from a single user, it boils down to a glorified adult Tamagochi combined with ELIZA's granddaughter. When your 'girlfriend' can take in dynamic content and react to it in something approaching real-time, then we can actually begin to call it AI.

Walking around with a smartphone camera and maybe Meta glasses is a good start on that - but you have the problem of how to respond without major social awkwardness. Some Deus Ex subvocal system would be the bees knees for that but I don't think one exists on the consumer market. I'd love one just for me and my coworkers to privately snark at the boss and his 2 flunkies in our weekly meetings.

With her severe lack of social survival skills, I am not surprised she is dating an AI. What kind of person is so down in the dumps that they resort to AI but goes the extra mile and tell their family such an embarrassing secret???
What concerns and puzzles me the most is this: How did she have a child in the first place, and more importantly, is she planning on getting the kid a human stepdad?

That said. Inherently i dont have anything against AI when it is use as an assistant or to help expedite menial work in order to maximize time. People making AI their GF/BF is beyond cringe and pathetic. I would kind understand if said people were so socially inept/timid that by practicing with an AI to help them socialize better. Instead we get some gooners and very lonely people using AI to fill a void that will never truly fill up. Imagine putting all this effort(making pictures, making up stories and such) when such effort should be more effective at actually getting to know someone. It could really take a toll on someones mental health, even then, you shouldnt fall in love with someone that doesnt exist in physical plane in general.

To be honest watching this was probably the very first time something AI/tech related has seriously depressed me. This is what giving up as a human looks like. I'd rather live my whole life without another single human soul to provide me comfort ever again then stoop to this level of complete lunacy.

I go hiking outside capture a snake and talk to it like it was a real person. Was fun. Snek was not happy with me and tried to kiss me when I let go of it.

Also AI companions and Vtubers unsettle me. Perpetually living in an aircon room chatting with either feels to me like schizophrenia. I cannot imagine having an oshi I cannot ever touch have meaning to me.
