But i wouldn't be surprised if BlacKKKlansman wins it, eventhough this is not Spike Lees best movie, not to mention Spike Lee is one of the biggest hypocritical pieces of shit walking around.
Has the griping started about the white guy being the only member of the cast to get nominated?

No matter who wins or who hosts the ceremony, you can be assured it will be filled with smug statements about #metoo, racial injustice, Trump Derangement and lots of patting themselves on the back for being so progressive despite allowing decades of abusive behavior in the industry on all fronts.

Hollywood is a fucking shitshow of autism.

At least Willem Dafoe got a nod, considering he was robbed for his performance in The Florida Project last year.

Willem Dafoe will never get an Award. He's not liked well enough by the old white men of the Academy nor liked by normies ("too ugly/scary!") or SJW hipsters for being another old white guy. At least he's made an eclectic career tho.

Seems like a pretty lame list. I usually try to watch some of the Oscar bait each year but nothing is standing out to me.
I guess I'll watch Vice and The Favourite, if I hate them at least I can have fun complaining about it.
The Favourite is pretty good, Yorgos Lanthimos style not at oscar bait at all, he did Lobster, Dogtooth and Killing of a Sacred Deer

It was The Dark Knight NOT getting nominated that led directly to shit like Black Panther getting in. After 2008, and the outcry of both TDK and Wall-E getting snubbed, the Academy changed its nomination rules and opened up the picture category from 5 to 10 in hopes that more populist fare would get in. Changed it again a year or two later to “at least 5 and up to 10”.

So congrats Academy, it only took you ten years to finally get comic book shit in the Best Picture race and by now absolutely no one but ten people on twitter give a damn.

Ah, I must've mis-remembered the whole thing. I remember there were talks about trying to get Dark Knight nominated because Heath Ledger died. I thought they gave it a token nomination, but I was apparently wrong.

Good to hear, I might be pleasantly surprised then. I loved The Lobster, definitely need to watch his other films. I'm just not a fan of historical dramas or Victorian stuff.

I haven't even seen the movie and I agree with you. I'm overly optimistic because both Disney films listed on the nominations this time are mediocre at best. I don't really care about the Oscars, I just want to encourage more interesting animation...
I'm guessing Spiderverse wins and Disney gets a best animated short win with Bao. That one had a minor woketroversy with people complaining about the stupid white people who didn't understand the short.

Not a chance. Golden Globes are the consolation prize for "notdisney" animation. I don't think any studio who is not Disney has ever won both the Golden Globe and an Oscar.

Black Panther getting a nom for Best Picture is pandering to the highest degree.

But we all know A Star Is Born will win because of it's scent of Hollywood farts. The Favourite is seriously the best film there and if Olivia Colman doesn't get the Oscar I will not be pleased. Really, that and Vice are the only noms you need to see. BlackKklansman at a push.

EDIT: One of the short films is in trouble too.

That movie has been promoted like no other. What’s funny is the movie itself is a remake (which has been made three or four times previously, I can’t remember the exact number). Also, Lady Gaga has been insufferable with her promotion, she’s talked about it so much, she seems like a broken record.

Black Panther pandering seems mostly limited to a token best pic nomination, thankfully. They didn't even put it up for visual effects, which was genuinely surprising.

I'm betting it's down to Bale or Viggo for Best Actor, almost certainly Adam Driver for best supporting actor, and I'm not familiar enough with the various movies to predict any of the actress nominations. Interesting that 3 of the 10 actress nominations are all from one movie, the Favourite. It's also a complete joke that McKay is getting a best Director nom for Vice, what with that movie's Film School-tier structure and gimmicky editing.

There's no way BP would get a nod for Visual Effects . Not when the final fight looked like a PS3 cutscene

So what film do you think is going to win best picture. Personally I think Bohemian Rhapsody has the best chance.

These things are so political, it has almost nothing to do with the movie itself but all backstage handshakes and who-hates-who. That’s why the “anonymous Oscar ballot” articles each year are so hilarious.

Black Panther? Hahaha no. They’d never give it to a capeshit and people outside of the Disney machine resent it.

BlackkKlansman? Lee is respected to a certain degree but not liked. Maybe the (white) woke crowd will throw it a few votes as a fuck you to Trump.

Bohemian Rhapsody? Shitty reviews, movie snobs won’t want to vote for what is a jukebox movie. And then there’s the whole Singer factor.

The Favourite? Too arch, too snide, too British (mind, I like this movie)

Vice? American Hustle 2.0 (except Bale might win this time)— a shallow hipster take on Darth Cheney. Except libs don’t care about Dubya since Trump.

Roma? If Roma wins the Academy is done in terms of pop culture. An arty black and white movie about a Mexican maid? Again it’ll get a few ‘fuck you Trump’ votes and the international voters (which make up a decent percentage of the Academy ) will like it but that’s it.

When in doubt, chose the most middle-of-the-road, non-offensive, emotional but not actually challenging movie. So that leaves Green Book and A Star is Born.

Exactly this. People meme about Best Picture always going to pretentious fartsniffers or transparent identity politics pandering but that's rarely ever actually the case. This is why Argo won over Beasts of the Southern Wilds. Or it is political, but in the microcosm of actual Hollywood politics (Hurt Locker winning because female director, or the bear rape movie being used as an excuse to give Leo a late Best Actor for Wolf of Wallstreet).

You seem to be operating under the understandable, but misguided, assumption that these awards have anything to do with the actual quality instead of voting based on what movie you liked the most or which film your buddies worked on.

Exactly. The pandering is in the nominations, but the actual award goes to whatever movie had the best campaign to appeal to Hollywood insiders.

I'm almost certain they doubled the amount of best picture nominees entirely so they could stuff the ballot with stuff to pander to the outside politics without crowding out what the Academy actually likes in terms of film. I still think the ultimate winner is more likely to be Green Book instead of a Star is Born, because the Academy seems to have learned that film studios are exploiting their love of movies about Hollywood for easy awards and they've consistently skipped over that nominee since giving an Oscar to The Artist.

I’ve given up on movies, television, video games, even radio.
It’s not political, the magic is gone.
Instead there’s a cult of castrated mediocrity in its place.

But they gave the award to Argo, which is all about how Hollywood literally saved lives. Granted, I actually quite liked Argo and how its Hollywood characters were all essentially con artists and plagiarists.

I honestly forgot about the Hollywood connection in Argo. All I remember about that movie is hiding Americans in the Canadian embassy and the embarrassing 1979 haircuts.
