Yeah, I have no issue with physically disabled women choosing to have a biological child, provided there are supports or modifications in place for any childcare tasks she might have difficulty doing on her own. We are all one bad day away from needing assistance with activities of daily living, and as long as someone can consent, I don't give a shit what they do with their junk.
SMA used to be one of those conditions that meant a person wouldn't need to worry about reproducing, to put it mildly, but that has changed with the advent of Spinraza/Evrysdi and Zolgensma. I actually think we'll start seeing a lot more of this as type I patients live to reproductive age.
However, this has "trainwreck" written all over it and I feel really bad for her, the kid, and her parents, who have to be absolutely beside themselves. To me, the tragedy here isn't that a wheelchair user got knocked up, it's that a young twentysomething who appears to be pretty goddamn sheltered is going to be tied to a flagrantly Cluster B shitshow for the rest of her life.
I can't even fault her parents for sheltering her, because even ten years ago, she wouldn't have been expected to live to adulthood. In a perfect world, everyone would talk to their kids about consent and how having a child with a person means that the two of you are connected forever, regardless of what happens in your relationship. I don't really blame them for not doing a good job of it, because I can only imagine how delicate it is to try to explain to your child that she's going to have to be doubly careful because 95% of men who will want to fuck her are going to be absolutely awful people.
I have a friend with SMA and I wonder if she's heard about this.
