I don't know what made that trend so popular, but the full names were usually such a mouthful I never minded it.

On that note I always thought The Varukers was a terrible name. Like, what the fuck is a Varuker?

Foo Fighters? It's a WW2 term for unidentified flying objects that pilots would report. I saw it on MTV back when the band was new. MTV was actually a fountain of cool info back then.
