Nah, they did. That’s why I said they are co-primary-antagonists. The big reveal isn’t that Henry was just a tool all along, he is explicitly the main target that our heroes need to beat with the Mind Flayer going down basically as soon as Vecna is impaled and with all the flashbacks as Joyce tries to behead him for almost a minute laying the blame for all the bad stuff happening squarely at his feet. They wink slightly at the idea of the Mind Flayer ackshually being in control but in the end the story’s final goal is explicitly beating Vecna not “OK so we killed the psychic psychopath now what the fuck do we do with the Eldritch abominations that were controlling him?” despite the pretence at walking back the Duffers’ stupidity in introducing Vecna/Henry in the first place.actually, they did walk it back.
There's a reason the very last reveal is that Henry was mindfucked by the Dimension X/Mindflayer Stone, the reason he rejects redemption is simple, he has nothing to reject it for, his entire life from that point on was miserable for him, and he did stunningly evil things while "Mind Flayed", this is the reason they cut to the burning fucking crib, "Henry" more or less no longer exists and hasn't for a long time, and the revelation brought back some ofhis childhood innocence, which was immediately confronted by decades of being about as evil as person could ever be.
This is why he simply weeps tears of despair and guilt instead of any anger while in his mindspace while talking to Will, and responds in a way different tone than before, for Henry, all that is left is giving in to the Flayer and committing to the horror, and this is VERY likely the reason he and the Mindflayer lost the big fight, he simply wasn't "in it" anymore, sure he fought it out and was willing to do as the Flayer wanted, but he was now completely mind fucked, this to me is the only good aspect of the Finale.. he really was Mind Flayed the whole time, and there was absolutely no good part of his life to turn to, to reject that Eldritch entity, unlike Will or anyone else.
