The movie "The Danish Girl" is about Elbe. And yes, Elbe died of atrocious quackery. The Wikipedia article used to describe the surgery as "successful" literally in the sentence before recounting that the dude died horribly as a result of the butchery.

People, by and large, believe popular opinion, and modern mass media is a platform that can create popular opinion like nothing before it. This has tremendous implications for civilization generally, but democracy in particular, as the extent to which a democracy is operational, it is rule by the creators of mass media. Jacques Ellul detailed all of this half a century ago, and Uncle Ted sent a bunch of people explosive gifts in an effort to get that idea out there. There's no easy solution to it, so far as I can tell. It's why I'm bullish on mankind bombing itself back to the stone-age. IMO, the future as it appears to be unfolding is so dystopian, we'd be better off being destroyed by an asteroid if very large changes aren't made and soon.

I can't find the name but there were a few other tranners "protected" by Hirschfeld, most of which were fetishists, probably a couple actual gender dysphorics. Wikipedia told me that the one I'm thinking of was probably burned when the Institute was burned, which to me would have been a merciful death considering it was National Socialist Germany. (Can't find the name NOW.) Someone in another thread on KF posted pages from old German transvestite fetish magazines of 1920s vintage that make you... not blame the Nazis so much.

So Popper clearly outlined when it's appropriate to suppress intolerant philosophies: when they refuse to debate and teach their followers to respond to arguments with violence. Of course this very clearly applies far more to the far left then the far right right now, so it's not surprising that leftists who always have Popper's name in their mouth never care to give the full quote.

Okay, this Mr. Pumpkinface comic is actually pretty good. Especially if you've seen the one he's parodying. Although it really should be "Read a biology book" like in the original.
 
This thread is half Stonetoss and half his detractors, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I like Stonetoss for the same reason Shadman makes me laugh (though I can't actually stand Shadman). All he has to do is make some lines on a page and it drives people fucking nuts.

The edits are good too because you can see exactly what part of the comic butthurt the editor.
