Got back from seeing it today. I actually thought it was really solid. The visuals are very impressive and it felt like something fresh and new for the franchise. I dunno if I like it more than Episode 7 since I have a soft spot for the latter in spite of its many flaws. But with that said, movies like this make me really glad that Disney bought out Lucasfilm and I'm interested in seeing more of these stand-alones.

So it didn't cut men's dicks off, turn them into troons and forcibly gay marry them to black Muslims?

I've seen the film twice now. This is an observation I had the first time, but the second viewing confirmed a few of the details for me.

So when Jyn and Cassian are climbing up the tower with the plans, Krennic and his guards pop out and start shooting at them. Cassian gets shot in the shoulder area, falls a few storeys, hitting at least two metal beamsz on the way down and lands on a gantry. Jyn keeps climbing, gets to the top but Krennic follows and pulls a gun on her. Cassian then comes up behind Krennic and shoots him, saving Jyn.

In order to do this, Cassian would have had to climb up that huge tower of data cards with an injured shoulder and likely a few broken bones, swing himself through that opening and closing trap door which required careful timing from Jyn and then climb on to the top. I'm pretty sure that's more Mary Sue-ish than anything Jyn and possibly Rey did.

He found the stairs.

I enjoyed the movie for the action but the only characters I could give two shits about was the robot and the blind force monk dude. This may be because I turn my brain off when I watch a movie so I can't give any in depth or meaningful insights

I'm surprised no one brought up the fact that Darth Vader makes a pun in this movie. While I understand that the Death Star is a huge destructive weapon, a planet wide shield seems a lot more powerful and useful.
I thought the movie was pretty good and did a service to both the Rebellion and the Empire. The rebels were effective without the storm troopers being incompetent and watching both sides react to citadel attack was great. The scene of Darth Vader at the end cutting through the rebels at the end and their terror was perfect. I think that should have been his sole appearance in the movie.

The pun was lame and we have seen enough of Vader choking people that it seemed unnecessary. He should have just done a Jedi mind trick and told him to GTFO or something. But all of his other dialogue was top-notch and he steals the show at the end. Ever since Lucas announced the prequels back in the 80's I have thought about how awesome it would be to show Vader laying people out left and right, and Disney made it happen.

Righto, I've seen the film, at fucking last.

The robot, blind monk dude and the Imperial Pilot defector were the best characters. Jyn was fine and the Hispanic MC was also just fine.

The CGI was mindblowing awesome. I loved some of the more....shall we say, planet breaking, actions scenes and CGI Peter Cushing was pretty damn good, especially when the light was low and it wasn't obvious he was a CG model. They even took the trouble to put his reflection in the Death Star's window AND have him react when the Director bumped into him. It was still a bit wonky, but holy hell it was impressive.

The ending sequence was spectacularly good, up there with some of the best set pieces from the original triolgy. Seeing Vader appear and cut down all the rebels like it was nothing was so fucking cool.

Final score: 7 or 8/10. Can't really call it as good as Empire or New Hope, but it was certainly fun to watch.

So I also saw the film at last and it was really mediocre.
Like people said the first half was dreadfully boring. Actually I'd say the first 3/5ths or so was boring. I wasn't invested at all until they got back from that rain planet (Edau?). The first 20 or so minutes of the movie was really dumb. I kind of hated how every like 5 minutes they would go to another planet and then another planet and then another planet. Like holy fuck, let's focus on one planet for awhile.
Some of the action scenes were really lacking too. Like that one where Jyn and the other rebel guy were in the alley and the Stormtroopers were missing all their shots like usual while Jyn and other rebel guy were perfect shots. Pretty much every time I saw the blind dude do something in a combat situation I cringed hard. Yes, please walk VERY slowly towards the switch while Stormtroopers constantly miss you. This is exhilarating and emotional to watch, totally not dumb as fuck. Yes, please dodge blaster bolts erry day. Being blind makes you superhuman am I right blind guys?
I was super happy with how they went about stealing the plans. I was incredibly nervous that it would be ALL action. There was a lot of action, but there was also really great and tense build up. What got me even more nervous about it was the Battlefront 1 DLC which kind of skews how the battle actually happened to make it better for the game.

Everyone keeps going on about how the ro-bro is the best character and I didn't really care for him too much at all. I didn't care for any of the cast actually. I especially didn't like the blind guy. His obsession with chanting really got me annoyed and like I said his action scenes were trash. Cut out two of the main cast members and focus more on developing the rest and I think the movie would have had much stronger/memorable characters. Krennic was fun to watch when he constantly got shit on by Vader and Tarkin. Also his admiration for the Death Star was pretty cool too. Other than that he was kind of bland. Gerrera was really cool and it was great seeing a more extreme rebel (That's one thing I really liked about the movie, portraying the rebels in a darker tone). Too bad he was killed off because he wanted to stop running away(???). Guess he really wanted to die by the Death Star. I didn't really get it, but whatever.
Darth Vader made a pun and that got me a little buttflustered. The Dark Lord of the Sith making a fucking pun is so dumb. That last scene with him was fucking HYPE though holy fucking shit. They totally nailed his slow movements while showing his skill with the lightsaber and the Force. Like holy fuck if the entire movie was just Darth Vader stomping on Rebel scum I would rate it an 11/10. The real part about Darth Vader that bothered me though was how SHIT his costume looked. In Red Letter Media's review they speculated that it might have looked this way so it would be like the shittier A New Hope costume. If that's true, that's fucking dumb.

The movie had some really weird fan service scenes. Like when Bail Organa was introduced, he just had the camera focus on him while a little tune played and that was it. There was no point of him being in that scene. It just served the purpose of saying "HEY, THIS GUY IS IN THE MOVIE TOO! REMEMBER HIM???". It makes sense that he's in it, but I would have preferred a more natural introduction later. He didn't even fucking say anything. Those guys Obi-Wan killed in the Mos Eisley Cantina showed up too. That was fucking dumb and way too obvious fan service. Princess Leia was CGI'd into the movie just because. That was dumb and she looked like shit. Tarkin looked like shit too, but he actually NEEDED to be in the movie. Really feels kind of weird too with Carrie Fisher being dead recently. There were other moments like C3PO and R2 showing up that were dumb too, but I can't remember those two or three moments.

It's definitely a Star Wars movie though. RLM are fucking hacks, I'm actually a little mad that they thought this shit wasn't Star Wars. Sure it had forced fan service, but it was undoubtedly an emotional movie and it offered a view of the darker side of the Rebels. Very cool shit right there, even if it wasn't 100% well executed. When that other rebel guy straight up murdered the guy who brought him info in the beginning I was legit shocked because I wasn't expecting Disney to do that shit at all. Yeah so fuck those fatty hipster manchildren.

So my Star Wars rankings is: A New Hope > Empire Strikes Back > Phantom Menace = Return of the Jedi > Revenge of the Sith = Rogue One > The Force Awakens > dog shit > The Holiday Special > Attack of the Clones.

I just realized something.

This is probably the first SW film that didn't have the usual "Text crawl giving a synopsis of the initial plot while John William's score blares in the background" at the beginning.

I wonder how many people "reeeeed" about that?

For the blind swordsman character, I was surprised they did not steal more gimmicky fight scenes from Zatoichi, the original blind samurai swordsman archetype. They just had the Star Wars guy fight like a non-blind guy in broad daylight, not even any scenes where he has an advantage from fighting in the dark against opponents. Zatoichi had to react by sound and tactile feel, make him seem more like a real blind guy.

I'm surprised we got the "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away" at the beginning and the traditional end credits. I was expecting to get something different entirely so it was kind of weird to have all that and not have an opening crawl.

One thing which bugged me about the film (and I know this is gonna come across as :autism:) was the fact they felt the need to caption nearly every planet they went to. No other Star Wars film does this so it felt really jarring, especially when a character would say: "We've gotta get to Eadu" and the next shot would be of a planet with the caption "Eadu" under it. Thanks guys, I think we could've guessed what the planet's called.

Saw it a few days ago.

First two acts were just...okay. The only characters I truly remember are Jyn, that robot comedy relief, and the blind Asian dude. It wasn't until they actually started stealing the Death Star plans that shit actually got interesting for me.

The digital resurrection of Peter Cushing was very hit-and-miss for me. Some shots it looked great, but whenever he opened his mouth, it was like I was watching a game cutscene. Carrie Fisher at the end looked pretty damned convincing, though.

I enjoyed it fine, but it's not something I'm clamouring to see again and again. Honestly, I think I enjoyed Episode VII more.

There isn't much that needs to be said really. Between RotS and ANH there isn't really anything that the audience needs to be filled in on that isn't covered in the original Star Wars crawl. if you were to watch all the movies in chronological order with a text crawl in Rogue One I feel it'd be a bit too much.
Speaking of John William's score, did anyone else feel that Michael Giacchino did SW music better than John Williams did SW music in TFA? The Imperial music in Rogue One was pretty cool and that song that played in the beginning when Krennic was coming for Galen had a really cool part in it. Wish I knew the names though, could probably hum them well enough. I still can't remember anything from TFA.

Personally I prefer Williams. It's the reverse with me - I can't remember much of Giacchino's score, except the parts which sounded kind of similar to his Star Trek score. No-one does Star Wars music like John Williams.

I also thought the pun was lame at first but then I remembered the OT is full of moments where Vader demonstrates a sort of grim, candid sense of humor. The kind of stuff a Gestapo officer would say.

"I find your lack of faith...disturbing."

"We would be honored if you would join us."

"You are in command now, 'Admiral' Piett".

"The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am."

As for the choke, that's also completely in character. To see Vader mind trick someone would just be weird. Winning people over or trying to persuade them isn't his style. He is very clearly a character who demands people fall in line and will dispense consequences to those who bug him.

Ask and ye shall receive.

This is the soundtrack played at the beginning:

This is the "imperial suite", which is an extended version.

From the Darth Vader/Krennic scene:
And Darth Vader's asskicking:

Michael Giacchino did SW music better than John Williams did SW music in TFA?

I personally disagree, I did like the TFA soundtrack a lot. But that being said, I think Giacchino's work was great. Particularly since the guy had literally only a matter of 4 weeks to compose it. That's considering it takes on average 6-12 weeks to do a film of this size, so mad props for the good work.
