Star Wars: Rogue One - Cat Party can't type a fucking title correctly so I had to fix this for him like I do everything

So, general thoughts:
  • Way better than Episode 7. The only thing I can remember about Episode 7 is that the black guy did nothing and the female lead was literally perfect in every way and farted sunshine and rainbows.
  • Full of murder. A+
  • Empire is genuinely terrifying for the first time and it somehow retcons their pathetic cartoonishness.
  • The first half is a bit slow but it pays off because the second half takes all those carefully thrown together concepts it seeds and uses them to make deaths impactful and exciting.
  • I loved the Robot
  • The asian guy.
So in the prequels George Lucas ruined the concept of the force being something anyone can pick up and use to better themselves. In this movie, Disney silently retcons the idea of blood determining how much force you have. They establish the blind guy uses the force to be an incredible warrior, and then he uses his faith to accomplish something impossible. This inspires his friend to also believe in the force and go on and accomplish something that should be impossible. It really subtly implants the idea that it's a matter of mind and not body and that's just gr8.

i wouldn't be opposed to an explanation in the mythology where it is kinda like reverse religion where "what we couldn't explain we attributed to science" as opposed to the traditional "explaining science through religion"

Literally got back from seeing it a few hours ago. Loved it, amazing film. DAT CG Tarkin! Anyway.
I explained it to a friend like this: "The Trilogy is about Big Things and Important People doing Big Important Things, This is about unimportant people doing desperate things. Rogue One starts approximately a week before Episode IV. In Rogue One nobody has any hope. The rebellion is a divided and complacent group that is drifting apart. Rogue One is all about building the Hope that justifies Episode IV's subtitle."

EDIT: Anybody think it's fucking GENIUS to be able to make a film quite that uplifting in which everyone dies?

If it helps, it was the only shitty trailer line they removed. We still have lines like "REBELLIONS ARE BUILT ON HOPE " in the movie

On the topic of CGI Tarkin, I found it bearable if only for Guy Henry's spot on impression of Peter Cushing. imo the best performance in the entire movie. Hell, I thought Tarkin was more the main villain than Krennic was.
I liked the fact that they got Tarkin so right in that he basically said to Krennic: "Oh your big ass gun ball works? Mine now, I'll tell the Emperor you were of no help. It was my idea, I'm SURE of it and so's everybody in this room who's more afraid of me than you."

Krennic was like that kid who really wanted to hang with the popular kids, so he did all this cool stuff to impress them, but when he was done they just stole his shit and laughed at him.

I honestly almost felt bad for Krennic from how much Vader and Tarkin shat on him throughout the movie.

Ya. That's why George Lucas's decision to make it about blood was dumb and it's why Disney is trying to mind scrub that idea.
Yeah I think Rogue One proves that Disney does have the best interests of the franchise at heart. I think we've got to accept that not EVERY film they make is going to be as good as Rogue One but there will be some good ones in the same way that the MCU shits out crappy films now and again but generally they're pretty watchable. My main criticism of Rogue One is the score, it's good, but Michael Giachino has a lot to learn about scoring a Star Wars movie.

I watched it the other day and I'm pretty disappointed.

The whole point of the movie was to tell "the untold story of the rebels who stole the Death Star's plans" yet I honestly couldn't give a shit about any of them. The entire point was to give them a name but coming out of the theatre I couldn't name any of them, their characters were so flat and boring.

Cool they made Star Wars grittier and darker and all that but to me it just felt like a generic scifi action movie given a Star Wars paint job.

I liked it as a prequel to Star Wars. I especially liked how the force was such a small part of the overall story and how there weren't any actual Jedi in it.

There wasn't even a lightsaber until the end. That screwed with my head a little.

I fully expected every Star Wars movie after TFA to be a rehash, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Disney is more creative than I gave them credit for.

I watched it last week annnd... it wasn't terrible, but at the same time I was pretty indifferent at the end. I might have to watch it again though, as the last time I was distracted with other shit. But to put it in a better light, I really don't care for the Star Wars franchise as a whole, so if I actually want to bother watching the movie a second time, I suppose that says something.

I do want to say something though- the final scene with Darth Vader is overhyped as fuck.

Watched Rogue One today.
General opinion: it's better than Episode 7, but not by a really big margin.

Concerning characters: the main heroine, Jyn Erso, didn't have the Sue-ish tendencies and glaring characterization holes of Ray from TFA... but also didn't have any memorable things either. Really, really one-dimensional - it's like the script writers decided to be on the safe side and not develop her character at all. Other rebel characters were also quite bland, but not as much as her. Oddly enough, the Imperials were okay - someone was a fan of the Empire, it seems. Also K-2SO was awesome - like C3PO, but less gay and more snarky.

On the other hand, I really like the design work. The designers perfectly captured the feel of Episode 4, from the Tatooine-esque Jedha to the jungles of Yavin 4 and Imperial bases with all these giant computers with vector screens and lots of buttons. The CGI was very good as well - I especially like Yavin 4 and the tropical planet with the Imperial archives. The final space battle was really awesome.
Concering CGI characters - Tarkin was quite good, I think, although his face looked a little bit like a caricature of himself. Princess Leia in the end doesn't really look that bad during her grand two seconds of screen time, IMHO. Any more, and the CGI's drawbacks would be visible. I can't say anything about the actors' performance, because here the film was dubbed into Russian.

Overall, it feels grander in scale than Episode 7. In fact, looking back in retrospect, Episode 7 was more of a spin-off than Rogue One. I'd call Rogue One "Episode 3.5" (or judging by the ending, Episode 3.9). It has a lot of good things compared to Episode 7, but sadly the characters are the film's weakest point. If the scriptwriter had written them better, this film would blow Episode 7 out of the water, but alas.

7.9/10

P.S. Not seeing the familiar text scroll in the beginning along with the good old music theme was a huge letdown.

I saw it yesterday and I liked it despite some of its issues. I have no issues with CGI Tarkin. Infact the uncanny valley for him WORKS for his character since your supposed feel uncomfortable around this guy. The acting was a little stilted and sometimes I found the humor to be a little to injected or forced but KS was pretty funny. It is true this the first time in Star Wars, they actually showed war.

The battle on Jedah was a little to on the nose with the space Pakis fighting the Empire but they did make it clear these guys are pretty unhinged, so much so even the Rebellion wants them gone. I will give it this though. The space battle on rogue one was possibly the best since the Battle of Endor and is easily one of my favorites now. I did like they showed a hammerhead but how they used it...eh its silly but hey you have a giant moon that can blow up planets so whatever.

The real crowning moment was seeing Vader fight with modern effects. It was awesome and easily the best way they could have ended the movie.

Got back from seeing it today. I actually thought it was really solid. The visuals are very impressive and it felt like something fresh and new for the franchise. I dunno if I like it more than Episode 7 since I have a soft spot for the latter in spite of its many flaws. But with that said, movies like this make me really glad that Disney bought out Lucasfilm and I'm interested in seeing more of these stand-alones.
