Times may be dark, but at least we have a new Star Trek show on the horizon. Star Trek: Lower Decks, a half-hour animated comedy series from Rick and Morty‘s Mike McMahan is set to premiere in less than a month and CBS just dropped our best look yet at it.

As you can tell from the trailer, Lower Decks will focus not on the bridge crew of one of Starfleet’s most impressive ships, but rather the support crew of one of its least important ones. The action (or, you know, not) is set on the U.S.S. Cerritos in the year 2380. Our heroes (or, you know, not) are Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi, who, according to the official synopsis “have to keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies.”

The show premieres on CBS All-Access on Thursday, August 6th, and will be released weekly. It stars Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler, Noel Wells as Ensign Tendi, Eugene Cordero as Ensign Rutherford, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman, Jerry O’Connell as Commander Jack Ransom, Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs, and Gillian Vigman as Doctor T’Ana.

Kurtzman: Shit, people like The Orville
CBS: Let's make a parody of Star Trek too.
Kurtzman: What the fuck is Star Trek?!
CBS: I think it's like Reddit and Morty but in space.
Kurtzman: I've got an idea.

Cant wait till this series is automatically declared a masterpiece by the critic sphere and wins a smorgasbord of awards for being the first cartoon to feature women and ethnic people

I can't wait until they try to force a Corporate Approved™ Astro-Turfed Pickle Rick meme on this trash heap.
Just you wait. There will be an episode where Rick and Morty literally show up and they have to fix Rick's portal gun or stop evil Morty in the Star Trek universe or some zany scenario. Bonus points if they all sit down to watch Two Brothers. But let's be real, nobody cares about season one of Rick and Morty.

Ya know im utterly ignorant of anything regarding rick and morty, having successfully barricaded my conciousness away from learning anything about it much the same I did with all reality tv and soap operas during my life, but I am vaguely aware that the premise of rick and morty has a bunch to do with time travel and alternate universe/dimension shit, and this opens up some really grim possibilities as to an actual and official crossover between the two strains of cancer

EDIT: @Too Many Catgirls beat me to it. And if we have thought of this, im guessing some corporate suits have been thinking about it too....

The concept has some potential. It'd be interesting and hilarious to look at the blue-collar esque workers aboard a starship. Everyone pays attention to the leaders and a few of the officers, but not so much the people trying to keep the ship from exploding. You could even make sort of a mockumentary style show a la The Office that's just about these people.

Unfortunately, given Trek's trajectory, this idea's going to waste. Plus it's going too over-the-top and whimsical which already isn't really Trek in the first place. It would have worked better as something more dry and tongue-in-cheek than whatever this is.

You know whats sad?

If American society could still handle actual edge instead of this puritan pretend edge (but not too edgy!), I bet this concept could actually be funny.

Instead you get another Rick and Morty clone.
