Hey guys, so I went to go see the movie on the 14th with a friend and we loved it, the jokes were great and I think you’ll like it. Ben Schwartz did a great job as sonic and Jim Carrey did a great job as robotnik. We got ourselves another great video game movie since Pokémon detective pikachu

The movie is still earning lots of money. it’s reached $65m in the box office. Fans love it. This movie is beating the living shit out of the Birds of prey movie.

By the way, game companies have apparently realized that embracing memes from their franchises is a good marketing tactic. I mean, sega added the SANIC t shirt in sonic forces, ID software is adding the trumpet revenant to doom eternal, and Capcom added the funny dialogue to street fighter 5 and devil may cry 4 special edition.

Embracing memes is a good marketing tactic because it brings in people.

Última edición:
Can I just say that I really appreciate the fact that the movie managed to avoid that cliche of “heroes or couple fight and break up before the climax of the movie” that shows up all the time. Yeah, Sonic was mad about Tom leaving, but they were still working together and getting along up until the explosion knocked out Sonic. And there weren’t any hard feelings after he woke up either. And his girlfriend completely had his back the entire time too. No forced romance drama or anything. It was a nice change of pace.

Speaking of Sanic:
A character named Crazy Carl is in the movie, and is one of the only people to have seen Sonic while he's hiding in the beginning of the movie. He legit drew Sanic as a reference as he rambles in fear how he's the Blue Devil. This is right before it shows Sonic fucking with him as Carl is trying to trap him, seeing it as a game.

I kid you not.

Yeah, it was pretty neat that there was no stupid arbitrary complications like that. I also really dug the fight with the Badnik (which actually is what the fucking drones are named) where the thing had contingency after contingency. Sonic spinballs it in a huff due to his emotions? It comes back as a faster car vehicle.

Smash that? It's a killer segway. Break that? Little hyper laser bug thing. With the last contigency being a bomb. That was pretty clever I have to admit.

I mean, Carl is literally the only person he’s had any form of communication with in ten years. He’s probably doing it for that more than anything.

Oh definitely. On more than on occasion it's very clear that he is cripplingly lonely, and that's a big reason why he talks to himself so much. You see him get seriously upset over that once or twice, or just recoil away in hurt.

Surprisingly heartfelt tbh.

The idea that somehow Sega made a better movie that was at least somewhat more accurate to the games than the Super Mario Bros. movie no doubt infuriates him.
The Super Mario Bros movie came out before widespread internet and before games were as mainstream as they are now. Hollywood’s approach to adaptation was “That’s stupid, we can come up with something people will like way more.” See also: Judge Dredd, Batman and Robin.

These days, you can just go online and find out exactly what it is about a property that appeals to people.

And yet, things like Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Charlie’s Angels(2019), Fantasy Island(2020), ect exist.

Nigger....please stop making me legit want to watch this in the theatre. Im an adult man. I have fucking dignity. This is genuinely sounding like it was accidentally created to be the ultimate kiwifarmer wish fulfilment masterpiece

Honestly I am considering going to it because everything I have heard about it speaks that is fun and sincere and I am glad we are getting away from Gritty cynical realistic reboot faggotry and demented twitter slap fights.

Isn't it funny that a year ago we were all laughing at this? It seemed like the perfect storm of shittiness between Sonic's abominable appearance, the seemingly cliche story, Jim Carrey's utterly insane performance, and the fact it's based on a video game series that lost the respect of everyone years ago. It was shaping up to be the most hilariously awful movie of the decade.

Now that it's out though, people are actually enjoying it semi-unironically. It handles its cliche plotline a lot better than it had any right to, the story itself has some good emotional weight, and there are some genuinely good jokes. It's not great but damned if it isn't a small success story in its own way.

I was wondering if the movie was going to go full-on grimdark with the Badniks all being powered/controlled by captive animals being tortured. They weren't, they were just creepy drones. Which worked very well for the mood of the film.

That’s how we got that original Sonic design.

If you told me just five years ago that the Sonic movie would blow Disney, DC and WB out of the fucking water I would've laughed, but that's where we fucking are right now. Harley Quinn, Star Wars, Pokémon, fuck all that shit, audiences would rather see Sonic do the Fortnite dance.

This timeline man.

What Star Wars film is Sonic outpacing? Rise of Skywalker is two months old and Sonic will probably make total (domestic) what that did in its first three days. The other two, yeah, genuinely surprised.

I have no interest in seeing sanic but i'd fucking buy 20 blurays if it meant I could get a behind the scenes for this movie. Honestly between the first and the second trailer there was such a significant change in the writing, pacing, and design that I would not be surprised if they rewrote a good chunk of the script. It's good to see that it is doing well hopefully movie studios start to understand that you probably should listen to your audience and not the media,

I don’t think they had any significant reshoots. They could have theoretically changed all of Sonic’s dialogue, however. What is probably the most likely case is that they had a decent movie that was saddled with a shitty first trailer and a shittier design for the main character.

I don't think so either because there's one point in the movie that makes slightly more sense if you remember Sonic's original design didn't have gloves.

There's a scene where Sonic gets a bomb stuck to his hand and no matter what he does he can't get it off. The group I was with wondered why Sonic didn't just take the glove off his hand to get rid of the bomb. I pointed out that the scene was probably made with the concept that Sonic wasn't wearing gloves and thus couldn't just take the bomb off.

I'm just sad they didn't include Chris-chan references. i'm sure the journos would have buried the movie if they did. but i would have loved if like Instead of Tom the Cop, it was Chris the cop, and Sonic was his imaginary friend as a child, and Sonic recently came to Earth because of a dimensional merge. Basically make it a riff on Sonic X, in a way.

Or maybe name him Ian B. Anderson instead, if they want deep cuts.
