The amount of effort that got put into the Mario movie would be unheard of today. As much of a mess that film is, the attention to detail, the set design and costumes especially, is full-on. Go autistic or go home.

Yea, the world building really drew me into the movie as a kid. It was an edgy, hyper real take on the universe, yet it all kinda jells for me. Mario and Luigi are great and the entire film feels like an epic quest through an alternate dimension. Frankly the movie gets way more shit than it actually deserves and I think that it would have been way better than something that was super faithful to the source material. Don't imagine too many people wanna see two dudes run around through a flourscent land while eating shrooms, stealing coins and abusing animals.

Honestly, it was better than it had any right to be. Surprisingly funny and a decent balance of being heartfelt, too. I can forgive things like flossing, etc., because whatever. It had Sanic in it, so that beats flossing. If nothing else, it didn't try to be something it wasn't, nor did it try to reinvent the wheel.

The Olive Garden references were kinda weird, tho'. I don't know if it was legit product placement, ironic humor, or both.

In light of this, I thought of sharing all the negative RT reviews to see why the score is where it's at (as of this posting)

The theaters near me are all almost fully packed, so it seems like a good time to see it. Plus it’s late enough not to be full of screaming kids.

everyone knows that career critics are partially empty husks of an actual human being, whose souls end up in the Circle of Hell that resides just above the one where lawyers go.

I thought it was very uncalled for when Sonic spin-dashed into a bunch of black people while yelling “#BlueLivesMatter”.

I just got back from it. I went with a group which ended up making the movie a lot more fun. There were some good jokes here and there and Jim Carrey was entertaining as hell. I wouldn't call it good, but at the same time I got what I expected and I had a really good time.

The fucking Sanic joke killed me though.

Just ended for me. Really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t call it super great or anything, but definitely worth watching. Also managed to avoid a lot of the “character sent to our world” tropes these types of movies usually hit, which was refreshing as hell

And yes, great use of the Sanic meme

Doug Walker gave a negative review and got Ratio'd. Specifically, golden ratio'd.
