Sonic the Hedgehog: 8/10
Sonic 2: 9/10!
I'm very, very happy to say it boosted my expectations beyond the first movie's sequel hook! I haven't been hyped over a kid's movie in years!
  • Tying Longclaw and the Chaos Emeralds together is one of the most creative ideas I've seen put to theater adaptations. The "ancient treasure map" isn't the most original plot, but then again it's not easy to seamlessly blend movie and game lore without using them as crutches. The writers clearly realized the weight of those concerns (like with Sonic's design) and made a 10/10 execution in my book!
  • I really like how they emphasized the familial theme when Knuckles teamed up with Sonic and Tails; the heart and talent is very much still there, which was the most important thing for me.
  • Minor nitpick, but the pacing could be a little slower in some scenes.
  • It was inevitable that Robotnik would eventually die or Stone would take the reins (his simping was one of the best parts of the movie!) given Carrey's retirement, but that's not to say he didn't "Carrey" on shitposting and went out with a bang (or foot tap)!
  • Tails was adorable; the tail blanket got a soft "awww" out of me.
  • Knuckles made me chuckle more times than I would expect! Wew lord, Idris gave it his all and he deserves a seat right up with Dan Green. Extra points for keeping his gullibility, especially with his skepticism/body language around Robotnik!
  • The robot stairs and the "stache swatter" had me rolling!
  • There were two memes this time: Robotnik said "he'd show Knuckles the way", and there was a second Sanic reference when he snuck out of Tom's house and used a dummy.
  • I completely agree that Rachel and the cops were dead weight; there was absolutely no reason to keep her aside from "le stronk independent black woman" and she's obnoxious as fuck. Though that's not to say a wedding subplot wouldn't be out of place, it just needs polishing and Hollywood always loves unnecessary drama quotas. I've liked Tom and Maddie from the beginning too, they're good standalones and already had their time to shine. Sonic & Company otherwise got the perfect amount of focus!
    IMO it would have worked better like this:

  • I was expecting either Shadow or Metal Sonic to be revealed, and even that execution blew me completely out of left field! :lol:

It seems likely given the GUN connection; there's also big creative potential with Metal Sonic and Agent Stone's technological expertise now that Robotnik is presumed dead. My guess is that if Rouge is confirmed, they'll take a spy/criminal route with her double crossing Sonic & Company, stealing the Master Emerald for her own personal gain (diamonds are a girl's best friend!), or being pursued by the government. I'd love to see one of my favorite femme fatales get the movie star treatment, but also fear the prospects of how execs will handle her with furries and Hollywood SJWs breathing down their necks.

I would try to persuade Kenny-boy to drop the idea if I were his lawyer. Sega could provide some decent counterarguments to his claims for the following reasons.

A) Sega could argue that Enerjak is derivative of the series "super" forms that predate the comic itself by several months. Moreover, the idea of bringing the seven Chaos Emeralds together to have a character go super draws inspiration from Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series, of which Z was airing in Japan at the time of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's release in November 1992. Notice how Sonic's quills curve upwards in his super form like a Super Saiyan. The onus would be on Ken to prove how Enerjak differs from a super form from a narrative standpoint, of which I doubt he has a legal leg to stand on.

B) Similarly, Sega could argue that Knuckles' father in the films could be derivative of Pachacamac (Tikal's father) from Sonic Adventure due to having similar markings. No can can copyright the idea of a character having a father despite what Ken believes. He wrote parts of the Sonic Adventure adaptation in the comic so he should realize this because he wrote the Knuckles Clan into the book. I doubt that anyone at Sonic Team read the comic around 1997-98 and Ken's echidnas were clearly not inspired by Mesoamerican tribes like their game counterparts.

C) Those panels from Sonic the Hedgehog (1993) #13 say jack shit and Jack left town. Did he even play Sonic the Hedgehog 3, or is he being a disingenuous fuck? (Trick question.) Even if he only watched his son play, he would have known that Sonic and Tails approach on Angel Island in the Tornado is in the game's very introductory cut scene. That story is an extremely loose adaptation of the game, and he has no legal claim to it.

I view Ken as both greedy and egotistical because I think the man sees himself as a creative talent on par with Jack "King" Kirby, but really shot himself in the foot when he wrested the characters from Archie. He cited that Kirby was one of his biggest inspirations, particularly Fantastic Four, on his website in days of yore. It would not be a surprise to me if Ken feels some vindication in doing what Kirby and his estate could not. To put it into context, Marvel and its corporate parents screwed Jack Kirby out of royalties from the characters he created and kept his original art for decades. Hence why he left for DC to create the Fourth World, which was originally a post-Ragnarok extension of Thor (hence the title "New Gods"). Jack died in 1994 without seeing a single cent from his (co-)creations.

The problem with Ken's lawsuit was that he won based on Archie's incompetence since they could not produce the contract that proved that it under work-for-hire. "His" creations are the supporting cast for a character owned by another company and would require SERIOUS repurposing to be commercially viable. The Echidnas and Chameleons in the Lara-Su Chronicles still look like enough like Knuckles and Espio for Sega to slap him with a "cease and desist" letter despite the designs falling in the uncanny valley. One has to wonder if Ken is subconsciously aware of this as the Lara-Su Chronicles is no closer to release despite a decade of promises. Sega is never going to allow his stories to be reprinted due to the lawsuit so he will never see ANY royalties from that, and neither will Scott Fulp (AKA Kent Taylor) who similarly sued Archie over Mammoth Mogul.

I would save myself the time, money, and humiliation.

What a whiny bitch. I can do a better review than that in a few short paragraphs.

Sonic 1 & 2 are stupid movies, but they're the good kind of stupid, like Evolution, or Idiocracy, or Spy Kids. Oof, maybe not Spy Kids, but you get the picture. These movies invite you to turn your brain off. They defy analysis. How the hell was Tails watching Sonic in a bubble bath from interstellar distances, and why isn't Sonic upset that Tails is effectively his stalker? It doesn't matter. It's a device to skip boring exposition. Tails already knows about Sonic without Sonic telling him anything, and that's the point. The dialogue is simple, but effective. It's corny in places, and overdosed with pop culture references, but you don't care, and the reason why you don't care is because it matches the theme of the games exactly. Sonic has always been corny. What relationship does a hedgehog have with chili dogs? Why does a fox fly a biplane? It doesn't matter. It never mattered. You're asking too many questions.

The art and VFX are incredible. Tyson Hesse's redesigns of the characters are so nice, I wouldn't mind if they back-adapted these movies into actual Sonic games. That's how good they are. The way the character models are lit is damn near photorealistic. They have volume and presence. Look at how Knuckles is lit up by the headlights of Tails' commandeered Crown Vic just before he's hit. He actually looks like he's inhabiting that scene. Every action scene was amazing, by the way. Sonic boarding down a Siberian mountainside and later, running across the ocean. The temple containing the Master Emerald. The final fight against Eggman's giant robot. Everything is a visual feast, leveraging the latest in rendering tech.

As usual, Carrey stole every single scene he was in. Idris Elba's amazing performance as Knuckles depicts him as naïve rather than offensively dumb like in his other more recent portrayals; this new characterization works well for him. Some complained that the wedding scene depicted GUN as retarded. Since when have GUN not been retarded? They're introduced to us in Sonic Adventure 2, transporting Sonic in a helicopter, in handcuffs. He slips his handcuffs, knocks out all the guards, peels a metal panel off one of the chopper's stub wings, and uses it to board down steep San Francisco-esque city streets. What do GUN do to try and recapture him? They chase him down an extremely steep grade with an enormous fucking semi the width of two lanes, and subsequently crash into an underpass.


GUN were always retards.

There is no reason not to see these movies. Watch 'em.

It says a lot that Batman, aging Jackass stunt guys and a blue hedgehog/red echinda with a highly expressive Jim Carrey is changing the way we see pop culture as we know it in current day.

I still remember reading the fan articles of Marvel movies where they compared the Avengers’ last few movies to The Iliad and The Odyseey.

Insane times.
 
With all the talk of Metal Sonic maybe showing up in the Sonic Movie 3 and the Chaotix possibly being involved in the Knuckle series, I can't help but feel like they might be connected somehow....

Dude, there is a part in one of the most popular Sonic games with an interrogation tape of a character who had his granddaughter brutally murdered by the government, telling all of humanity that they will die because of what they did before it is implied that he was executed by said government.

And that's not the only thing that's been in a Sonic game that's far worst than Tails running over Knuckles with a car.
 
Just got back from watching Sonic 2 and here are some thoughts.

I kind of think this film is structurally weaker than the first one, mainly because the set pieces and plot points are not all that focused due to jumping between A and B plot. There's a subplot involving the wedding that feels fairly tacked on. It doesn't add, but it doesn't weaken the film either. Likely a sop to the studios.

Still, the human characters were fine, and honestly the Big Momma character was fine. She actually made me laugh a couple of times, which is nice.

Conversely, the main characters are very well done. I'm glad Tails' VA got equal billing since she had the best voice besides the guy who plays Sonic. The two that really take it away though goes to Carrey and Elba. Very fun dynamics between the two and both know when to be villains or just plain goofy. And Elba especially was great as Knuckles. He had the right mix of being a goof but also a ruthless warrior, reminds me of a good balance between Guardians 1 Drax and Guardians 2 Drax. If they keep to that level then his show will do well.

Also slammed a fuckload of other references in a natural way too.

I'd say the first film was like a 7.5 - 8 out of 10. This one I'd say is comparable.

The first film's structure does benefit from having a pretty standard kids movie formula. The sequel's a bit more gonzo in its construction so the pacing and formatting suffers a bit, but for me the highs outweigh those little things.
 
I saw the movie this week, absolutely had a blast.

Only main gripe is the wedding side plot taking away time from important scenes like the cool fighting between Knuckles and Sonic. I wholly prefer when most of the human interactions are mostly of Tom and his wife. I don't mind the side characters but those side plots shouldn't take that much pirority or time over the main plot.
I'm very hopeful that the next installment has more fighting scenes, though.

Brings me back to 1999, when the bulk of movie critics only knew anime exclusively as movies and more specifically as "art" in the vein of Studio Gihbli's work. Which was why they freaked the fuck out when the first Pokemon movie came out and couldn't even comprehend that it was the norm of theatrical anime releases in Japan and not the exception. And also it was that weird Japanese thing that kids liked and was so controversial because they didn't know how to relate to kids.

Some things really just never change.
 
Watched last night. 7/10, a solid sequel (wich, for a movie based on a videogame, is a lot).

I was a bit disappointed, though. I expected to see a post credits scene where Eggman meets Chris-chan in jail.

This might be a hot take, but I kinda hope that the only new Sonic character to show up in the next movie is Shadow. I feel like having Rouge and Amy might bloat the cast a bit, trying to give them ample development and the humans and Shadow. Besides, as far as Amy being the one to convince Shadow to go good? That could easily be relegated to one of the humans, because I don't think they're going away.
