To put it simply, in agrarian Western Europe, a man's labour was worth more than a woman's, and as a result men had more individual power. It made practical sense to restrict men and women to the roles that suited their strengths. This isn't to say that this inequality was a good thing, but rather this structuring of society was pragmatic, and a consequence was this inequality. Come the Industrial Revolution, Western nations shifted from being agrarian to industrial societies. As a result, the value of a man and woman's labour become equal.

This is actually the opposite of what happened. In agrarian Europe, average men and women's labor was more equal because both worked at home together. Wives helped their husbands with farm work or his craft, or otherwise did something at the same time that had economic value, like sewing clothing to sell. Only upper class women could afford to sit on their asses all day not bringing in any money for the family. The Industrial Revolution devalued homemade products and their labor, turning factory work into main income source for working class people. Factory owners would pay women less, viewing their work as less taxing and the higher income of their husbands as sufficient to provide for his household, and there were even laws restricting women's work on the basis of protecting them from grueling long hours and like. This basically invented the wage gap and the separation between men providing for the family by working in public spaces while women did domestic work at home that didn't bring in any income. Far from a fix for gender inequality, pretty much all modern gender grievances and the feminist movements made to counter them are rooted in the Industrial Revolution and its consequences.
