God, this is the one I’d hate the most. Ryukishi thinks that shit would be clever and I can see it happening. Soon we’ll get an Umineko retcon at some point where Lambda has more of Satoko’s design in it.
I personally can’t stand writers retconning their own shit because they thought of something years later that’s much more clever! Hate it.

My theory is, Ryukishi watched Madoka’s Rebellion movie and remembered he had time-looping teen girl characters, too. The parallels are there. Or I’m just crazy for seeing it.

I really can’t stand what this series is doing. Destroying everything the original story was telling, just for some Rika torture-porn.

Speaking of, a new chapter of the manga was released by the way. I’m not sure if I can say it’s done better than the anime yet. The buildup to Akasaka’s rampage was done better, but it’s still a mess either way—because it’s Sotsugyou.

It might just be me, but I can't help but be reminded of Re:Zero when it comes to some of the torture porn/ disrespectful death scenes.
Alongside the Bakemonogatari character designs, it does feel like maybe they're trend hopping with the new Higurashi.

I see it going one of two ways, both utterly unsatisfying and retarded.
1.) Rika stays in Hinamizawa, utterly cowed by Satoko's new retarded resolve, leaving us pretty much where we stood as of the end of Kai, making it double stupid.
2.) Rikastel and Satodelta assfuck each other in battle until Rikastel commits murder or murder-suicide with the sacred blade thingy. If only Satoko dies, she'll give some long wanky diatribe about how "she realizes Satoko cared" or some shit. If it's a murder-suicide, they'll die, fade to black, smash cut to an elegant checkerboard room and swarming golden butterflies which form Bernkastel and Lambdadelta, who go on about game pieces and shit then laugh at each other's game, cue Katayoku no Tori as it fades out.

Mark my words, because that's how this retarded crossover shit always goes.

3.) This goes the Sonic 06 route and retcons the entirety of Gou/Sotsu.

I woke up realizing I never analyzed and cross-referenced the arc names, so I'mma do that right now because I think it definitely reveals just how uninspiring the current arc names are, and it's not because they're following similar patterns.

So the original question and answer arcs:

Onikakushi - 鬼隠し (Spirited Away by the Demon)
Watanagashi - 綿流し (Cotton Drifting)
Tatarigoroshi - 祟殺し (Curse Killing)
Himatsubushi - 暇潰し (Time Wasting)
Meakashi - 目明し (Eye Opening)
Tsumihoroboshi - 罪滅し (Atonement)
Minagoroshi - 皆殺し (Massacre)
Matsuribayashi - 祭囃し (Festival Accompanying)

Bonus because I kinda like this one: Onisarashi - 鬼曝し (Demon Exposing)

The arc names make sense once you play/watch them, but there's no actual link between them kanji-wise. Closest we have is "殺", "koro", which is also in the title of the series "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni", except that "koro" is time-based, "頃". But the series has also been known to be read as "When the Murderers Weep", and "higurashi" also means "from day to evening" (a famous sentence goes "彼等はそのひぐその日暮らしのせいかつ生活をしている", "They live from hand to mouth") and is not just the name of a species of cicada, so yeah, wordplay is kind of a literary theme.

Here're the question arcs from Gou literally stealing the other arcs' identities to try and pass them off as its own:

Onidamashi - 鬼騙し (Demon Deceiving)
Watadamashi - 綿騙し (Cotton Deceiving)
Tataridamashi - 祟騙し (Curse Deceiving)
Nekodamashi - 猫騙し (Cat Deceiving)
Satokowashi - 郷壊し (Village Destroying)

"騙", "dama", is exactly as it says, so the arcs "trick" not just the viewer but also Rika into thinking they're the same previous worlds until something goes horribly wrong. Thing is, the only original-original arcs that exist are the final two, Nekodamashi and Satokowashi. "Cat Deceiving" is literal because that is truly Rika being deceived into false hope. "Satokowashi" is a play on words when written phonically. The "sato" of "郷" is "countryside", but is phonically also the two kanji of Satoko's name, which is written as "沙都子". "沙" by itself is "sand" and "都" is "metropolis". The reading for her name is through the "on" reading (compound kanji), hence her name means "sand town child". "壊", "kowa", is demolition. So therefore, Satoko destroys her link to the village of Hinamizawa (practically taking a wrecking ball to her hometown) while also practically making it her goal to destroy Rika's dream of leaving the village.

It's too fucking bad the arcs sucked ass, but the wordplay is still undoubtably a Higurashi tradition.

And these are supposed to be the "answer arcs" of Sotsu:

Oniakashi - 鬼明し (Demon Revealing)
Wataakashi - 綿明し (Cotton Revealing)
Tatariakashi - 祟明し (Curse Revealing)

Notice Meakashi has the same kanji of 明 that is in Sotsu's arcs. Yet no one calls Meakashi "Eye Revealing" in translation. Meakashi-hen may have gotten its name from an old proverb: 目明き千人盲千人 (which has two different meanings: "Some are wise and some are otherwise", and "One thousand with their eyes open; one thousand blind" as "盲" is "blindness" but also "ignorance"). So the Sotsu arcs, when you follow how Meakashi-hen is read, would be like "Demon Opening", "Cotton Opening" and "Curse Opening", but is really more along the lines of "Demon Ignorance", "Cotton Ignorance" and "Curse Ignorance" because Rika has no idea what's going on. We know what's going on because it's being "revealed" to us, the viewer, but Rika can't seem to notice her own nose in front of her face to save her life.

Despite the wordplay, the arcs are still terrible because it's literally just a frustrating rehash/retread of Gou with no sign of stopping. Watch the last arc probably be called either "Nekoakashi" (Cat Revealing) or "Satoakashi" (Village Revealing) and not actually be anything new. Or, calling it now, "沙汰明し", "sataakashi". "沙汰" (the "sa" which is the same kanji in Satoko's name) means "verdict", so it'd be "Verdict Revealing", or "Incident Revealing" depending on how people wanna read it. This is where Rika goes "Omg it's you all along how could yoooooou? ಥ﹏ಥ" and we're supposed to feel bad as Satoko goes all "I DEFY YOU HEART MAN" before becoming Lambdadelta and Umineko fanboys cry-wank themselves to sleep.

Or because they knew they fucked up pacing-wise, they give us a third season to drag the pain out further and milk more money from the fans.

The original series did it, that means this one has to, too! Apparently. Even though it made sense to retread material in the original 2006 series because there were actual questions that needed answers and while it was being answered, we learned more about the village itself and the relationships between the older characters and the legend.

And it was all done in it’s first season, leaving the last 2 arcs (Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen) and a commissioned one (Yakusamashi-hen) into Kai.
Mostly done because by the time the anime started airing in 2006, the original sound novel hadn’t been completed yet.

Sotsu has no reason to do this same thing as the answer is the same each time—Satoko injects someone with a the syndrome and watches the world collapse around Rika. We don’t learn anything new about the characters or the village (I barely count Eua being a “character” and just Ryukishi’s mouthpiece), but this time they want you to feel bad for wanting certain characters to die, so let’s redeem Teppei into Satoko’s doormat and Ritsuko was just misunderstood.

Watching Rena go insane again could have been summed up in one episode. There was no need to be this far in and it’s still just old material.
When do we get back to Satoko holding Rika at gunpoint? How long are they gonna drag it out?
Most of the leaks turned out real so if they’re all real then it’ll be dragging on for a while before we get back to their initial confrontation.

Apologies for writing so much, I have a lot of feelings about this series and what’s happening to it now is just awful.
