Thankfully that's why mods exist. Basemods has one called "Less Legalese" that gets rid of these messages in the intro as well as other texture packs that restore the original intent of the classic TR removing the censorship.
Basedmods seems to be broken unfortunately. Something high-level got fucked with and the games list is gone.

Rolling Thunder on the NES is kicking my ass. Or actually my finger. I didn't know I could overstress my finger on a dpad until this game.

It's actually really fun, but only when you're shooting the basic enemies. Which is most of the game, thankfully, but they introduce a few other enemy types that are all annoying as fuck to fight. People warned me that the platforming was really bad, because you have zero air control, can't attack while jumping, and move a set distance every time. At first I didn't mind the jumping but the 6th level has some of the worst bullshit "platforming" I've ever seen.

fuck this shit.png

The 6th level has a part where you have to jump through a laser with insanely specific timing, which actually doesn't seem possible the first few times you try it. You can also try to platform through on top of the tires, BUT that requires making a series of really precise jumps, and if you mess up once, it respawns an enemy that can oneshot you so you have to stop and kill him, which could take up to 10 seconds off your already short timer. This alternative method is just a trap. Ultimately, the best strategy is to just jump directly into the laser until you luck your way through the completely nonsense timing. I have to admit you kind of get a feel for the timing after a few tries but its insanely unintuitive because it looks like you get hit by the laser even when you pass safely. It sucked so bad and it was just a tiny section of one screen. I beat the 7th level right after in like 2 minutes, which was a fraction of what it took me to get by this fucking thing.

I have 3 more levels before the clear. Overall I quite like it, and it's not even that hard except for that one part, unless some new bullshit appears in the last 3 levels. Worth a play if you want to pretend to be James Bond wiping out the gay flag KKK.

When I was a kid, I used to pretend it was a GJ Joe game because I thought the enemies looked kind of like Cobra Commander when he wears the hood.

This was before the criminally underrated Real American Hero game came out.

Are you playing the US version or the Japanese? The US version was one of those games that got tweaked to make it harder, the Japanese version is a bit more forgiving.

Japanese. I didn't know there was any difficulty adjustment, I thought the only difference was the American version had terrible sound because they left out the custom soundchip.

There are some tweaks to timing and bullet count to kill some enemies, and I think the timer runs a tad faster, but I could be wrong there.

The best version of Rolling Thunder for NES/Famicom is Code Name: Viper.

The TCRF page for it doesn’t mention the difficulty changes between versions as of yet. The retards that run that shit site are just too lazy I guess.
As much as I hate recommending the site due to being run by assholes and the fact they never copy edit their entries, Hardcore Gaming 101 tends to be pretty good about version differences, depending on who wrote the article for the game you are looking at.

You know, I sometimes think that HG101 is even worse than TCRF when it comes to moronic political sperging about old video games. It mostly depends on the game though.

It doesn't so much depend on the game, but on when the entry for the game was written. They weren't too bad until about 2010, and got really woke around 2014 like everyone else did in the wake of gamergate.

The shit writing has always been an issue, especially the un-corrected ESL drivel from some contributors. The Ultima series is particularly terrible as an example of a bunch of totally irrelevant shit being crammed in by an egomaniacal sperg.

In the case of Rolling Thunder, they say there are no post level cutscenes in the NES version even though there definitely are. They don't mention the US version being more difficult either. I kinda want to check myself now, but the game is so fast-paced and hard already it might be difficult to tell if anything is different lol.

EDIT: Yeah, having now played 5 stages of the Tengen US version, I'm pretty sure the difficulty is no different from the Japanese release. Maybe the final boss is harder, still haven't got there on either version, but the normal enemies behave identically, enemy placements are the same, item pickups are the same.

One interesting thing is that in the US version the bottom of the screen is cut off for me. The title screen was moved down in the US version to add "Tengen Presents." The screenshot on TCRF doesn't show the screen being cut off though, so this must be an emulator issue or something. I'm using FCEUmm through retroarch.
Japan: Rolling Thunder (Japan)-260627-120347.png US: Rolling Thunder (USA) (Unl)-260627-120308.png

EDIT 2: Actually, upon second look, the Japanese version actually appears to have harder enemy placements! At least on level one. There's no grenade throwing enemy on the stage one in America, and one of the shooting enemies has 2 health instead of 1.

As weird as it may seem, playing Codename: Viper is good practice for Rolling Thunder, as it is basically a clone of RT, right down to the jumping physics, but it is less ball-crushingly difficult.

Even just messing around with C:V for a second, yeah it's much more refined. The jumping is actually way better because you can change direction mid air. Funny that it was apparently made by Arc System Works.

Arc has been around forever and started out as a work-for-hire dev much the same way as Atlus, Square and HAL.

HG101 is really hit and miss. I think I've talked about my experiences there (used to be one of my favorites, actually) but I started to really zone out when they redesigned the site to that bland look and took away the way to view everything on the site on one page and just started focusing on glazing modern circlejerk indies.

I've attached a quote from a review about a certain well-known title, censoring the name. It's not written by Kurt Kalata but it may as well be with its hatred toward gamers and generally bad taste.

Two stories are particularly impactful. The father’s struggles with his artistic dreams was a big one, but one particular event that happened to the sister is what is the most memorable, because no interactive story before has gotten it quite so right. Sometimes, all we need is something that emotionally connect with us, and [%PRETENTIOUS INDIE SLOP] does just that.
