Now, I know the emulation community is pozzed to heck and back, but this just does it.
Please recommend me some other N64 emulator without this kind of crap.
Normally I'd recommend Ares, but other users ITT have had bad experiences with it. It's not like it costs anything to try, though.

Okay, so I booted up this N64 emulator I've been using for some time without issues and, after the latest update, I noticed... this in the UI.
Name and shame the emu? That's easily patched given that most emus are open source. RetroArch plus whatever core will bypass all this horseshit. That's one of the reasons there's so much anti-RetroArch hate, not that all anti-RetroArch hate is invalid.

I don't know why I bothered buying Rare Replay when it went on sale. Their old stuff is godawful, their N64 stuff is godawful, and Viva Piñata seems boring so far.

Jet Force Gemini's "modern" control scheme is a total abortion, but looking at the "original" scheme, I guess it could be a lot worse.
The Banjo games are good. Banjo Tooie is a lot more playable there vs N64.

And I wouldn't play it on an xbox but Goldeneye is the GOAT.

It's right there, it's called RMG - Short for "Rosalie's Mupen64 GUI" and yes, it is done by an outspoken troon and its merry band of suckers.

I don't mind RetroArch, but my laptop is an outdated piece that is due to be replaced later this year, and I really don't have the time to configure each and every core one by one. Especially since I love dicking around with shaders and borders. For now, I'll be content with a decent stand-alone.

Ah, I had no idea what I was looking at. Easy fix tho, if you care to DIY. Replace the following function.

Código:
QString MainWindow::getWindowTitle(void)
{
    return QString::fromStdString("lol fag");
}

I run RetroArch on an rk322x Android TV box converted to Linux and a seven year old $100 Android phone. N64 emulators will run on just about anything these days.

Your three main choices for N64 emulation are Ares, Gopher64, and RetroArch with the Mupen64Plus-Next core (this one may require a bit more dicking around with plugins depending on what you’re playing, while the other two don’t have plugin options for better or worse).

You could install RetroBat which does most of the configuring for you if you want a good “lazy power user” balance, then pick your emulator of choice from its UI. Great shader and border options, too.

What emulator is that?

I'm kinda surprised Microsoft didn't re-release Rare Replay or any of the games it had on there, and we had to wait for fan projects like Banjo Recompiled to play games that people actually liked and wanted to see, like Banjo-Kazooie. Their pre-N64 library (that's not Donkey Kong Country or the sequels) sucks and even ardent Rare supporters don't even talk about half of them and I think the Rare games on the N64 do not hold up as well as stuff like Super Mario 64 or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I dropped Blast Corps because the controls suck. The bulldozer was kind of fun but the dump truck, screw the dump truck.

Getting closer every day. This is the, maybe final, design for my MiSTer. I've gone back and forth between ITX and a custom instrument style enclosure to this Checkmate A1500 case, and back, and forth. I have some filament on order that's supposed to match the front panel but we'll see if I like that look better.

As I've mentioned on the electronics thread I've been working on milling the control PCB, that makes the lights light up. Got it milled, then promptly ordered them from PCBWay so they'll have silkscreens and everything.
The white button is MiSTer power, the upper right is power to the LattePanda management SBC which talks to that display and another RP2040 on the control PCB and serves as an Ethernet connected NAS for MiSTer. The other 3 buttons are the "standard" MiSTer buttons. Right 4 USB are off the MiSTer hub, "USB-3" is the MiSTer User-IO port. The LCD can display game logos and system stats, mostly temperature and fan speed controlled by the control PCB. The LCD also controls a 3 port USB switch so the MiSTer USB hub can be used for MiSTer, the on-board x86 or an external PC plugged into a USB port on the rear.
Once I get the rear panel secured I'll post that, and maybe once I get the wires routed inside a photo of that mess.

It's also annoying the difference in price between cheap Amazon/Chinese crap buttons and high end NKK buttons that you want to look cheap and "fun". I went back and forth between momentary toggle switches(Altair 8080 style from APEM) and those buttons repeatedly until I finally broke down and sprang for the NKK buttons.

Thanks for reminding me why I'm one of those spergs who prefers original hardware over emulation, but not enough to be one of those obnoxious anti-emulation spergs. Yet.

The one thing I don't like about my flash cart (for GBA) it doesn't have the niceties that emulation offers like quicksave and fast-forwarding. I know I've had to futz around with emulation when it comes to beating particularly difficult sections or scanning e-cards into the system. I thought about getting a GB/GBC flashcart but the problems with that are that I have the biggest hits that I'd want (Pokemon, Pokemon TCG, Zelda, even fucking BurgerTime Deluxe) and most of the old Game Boy games don't have battery backups.

Dug out my 3DS, which is in the exact state it was when I last played it. I've not powered it on, but I don't think it's been out of the case for the best part of a decade. At least before COVID iirc. Still has the games I was playing at the time in the carry case. Trying to find the charger for it.

Turns out there's a "street pass meet" at a nearby convention. I used to like Street Pass, it's a shame no one really carries 3DS with them any more. Though I'm wondering if it's worth carrying with me any time I go on public transport, just to see if I get any passes.

It was one of those features that doesn't really work when emulating. I'm sure there's ways to fake it, but that lacks the magic.

Just here to chime in and say something that's probably obvious to 95% of you but for the other 5%:

Avoid emulator discord servers like the plague, they are full of the most "moral"faggy transgender niggercattle you will ever see.
What happened?

I had a few people in my Street Pass but I accidentally corrupted my 3DS. There were only three. There was only one person who was truly random, the other two were people I met.

If you guys boycott anything troon related in the emulator sphere you're not gonna have a lot left. It's just something you have to not think about.
Speaking of troons and retro games, I read that Harbour Masters has announced their own port of Banjo-Kazooie which I'm not too impressed by. Their Zelda 64 port was top-notch but I couldn't believe how bad the Super Mario 64 port was. Sure, it's easier to get working but it crashed all the time and hardly had any features (plus, unlike the Majora's Mask port they put the "quit game" button RIGHT NEXT to the "close options window" button). They put out an updated version recently but your anti-virus will throw a fit, it doesn't really fix most of the issues in the game, and the new features they added don't work properly either.

I’m confused as to why they even made a Mario 64 port when better ports that cover all the same use cases have already existed for years. Want a bunch of options and QoL enhancements? Super Mario 64 Plus. Want crazy mod support? Co-op Deluxe. Want portability to other systems? EX. If Ghostship at least combined the best of all worlds then I’d understand, but it doesn’t.
