Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Continuing progress on my super-simple MiSTer build.
All 3 custom boards are in and working. Couple glitches like missing a pull-up on the fans since I didn't think I needed one, and not accounting for needing to monitor a 5V line to see if the LattePanda was powered on, added a quick perf-board voltage divider for that, along with the needed LED dropping resistor.
I'd gone back and forth about having an MT-32-Pi on it. When the developer had a mental break a while back I decided maybe to just use the external UserIO port for it. Then I found someone is working on it and added Pi5 support. So I added it back in and made my 3rd custom board to switch the UserIO between the MT-32-Pi and the front panel.
The front panel display is working but the emulation of an I2C display for the MT-32-Pi isn't quite there. I AI coded it all and it missed ignoring the I2C command codes as well as it's not refreshing properly. But the I2C base code does work and the switch board does too.
Next need to fix the front panel mount for the LCD so I can wire it up, since I need to re-print I'll try the "Amiga Beige" filament instead. Then a bit more testing and I can finally try and play a game.
Luckily the design is very simple and easy to replicate.

One of my original designs tried to emulate the LED and front panel buttons on an LCD display like the one I have but bigger. The Master Control Board even still has the wiring needed to read the PWM of the LEDs and emulate button presses to MiSTer, but I decided against that aesthetic in favor of a ton more wires.
It's fun being able to tap the LCD and have it power on and off the MT-32-Pi and also the push-button for MiSTer which tells the LattePanda to SSH to it and run poweroff to make sure any buffers are synced before dropping that relay.

NEC made some crazy hardware for the PC Engine, it's one rabbit hole read about.

The only CRT console combo I ever seen in person was a Sharp NES TV at a pawn shop for $500 many years ago. Those TV consoles are hard to find intact since the feet easily break and alot got destroyed through shipping since it's too difficult to pack to prevent damage.

I had this as a kid. Only problem was that the NES part stopped working properly. Pushing the cartridge down once it was in the slot would not play the game and instead would only play if it was up and had a piece of paper stuck to the bottom of the cartridge. Otherwise you'd get the blinking black/white lights when you pressed the power button.

Gonna say this guy was an idiot for checking a CRT onto a plane. Considering he paid like $3000 for it, and paid for a special case, could have just paid to send it air freight easy.
I know from growing up in an airline family that you don't EVER entrust anything delicate to the bagsmashers who handle checked luggage.

If it is fragile, check it in as cargo at the appropriate desk or a dedicated shipper. Checked bags are literally thrown into the bins as fast as possible.

He should have left it in Japan, anything both fragile AND rare shouldn't be subjected to travel of any kind or border security.

Years ago I found a Sony PVM-1390 in a hard off -- I ran my head through the risks and decided ya know maybe it can just stay here for some Japanese vintage video game fan to enjoy and I can pick up a CRT in Canada.

I know the feeling. My dad was an airline pilot for United back in the 90s. We never checked our baggage.

Ive flown an excessive amount... i would never put an electric device into checked baggage. Haven't had many issues. Had my luggage lost once and returned and had a leather jacket stolen out of one.

Two bad experiences in... likely close to 50 flights? That said had to sue them to recover the loss of the jacket they refused compensation.

Is there anybody in the thread who owned a Sega Saturn back in the day? I was posting about Panzer Dragoon Saga in the JRPG Thread (it's a great game btw!) and it had me vaguely interested in what it was like since like 70-80% of the library was locked behind Japan. I feel like I lucked out since most of the more popular foreign entries are getting translated more often now than ever.

I had one, got it post-discontinuation for $50 brand new, and felt like it was a waste of money with what the prices were for the games worth owning, and that was back in 1998!

If you can get a Japanese second-generation system and can find good ISOs of what you want to play, it is still only worthwhile if you can't just emulate. The system was a real half-step between 16-bit systems and where tech was heading, in some annoying ways, like the system memory having to rely on a battery, and the external memory cart ALSO being battery-backed and an annoying hassle to use.

One other option for which unit to buy if you REALLY have to own a Saturn is to get a first-run US model and do the toggle switch mod for region changing, but then you have the reliability issues of that particular run to deal with.

Still got my OG. Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2, and Daytona USA bundled. But I live far from stores that sold decent games. I got Nights but there wasn't a lot else that really made me love the system. The best games were very niche.

I grew up in rural Canada and I never even saw it in stores in my parts.

I only ever saw them in Sears, Toys R Us, EB, Future Shop and The Bay. Walmart eventually brought them in, but even in late 1996 they had more Genesis stuff than Saturn in most of their stores.

My Saturn was bought at The Bay. Canadian launch units didn't get the packed-in Virtua Fighter the US did, and had a big sticker covering the flash on the front of the box saying they did. The original price tag was on the box, $749.99 but when I had the salesman scan it to check, it rang up at $49.99 and they had an additional 10% off all clearance electronics, so I got it for $52 with tax.

I was one of the rare kids that had a Sega Saturn when I was very young. My favorite game for the Saturn is Guardian Heroes. It's like River City Ransom (as in a beat 'em up with a level-up/stat system) but in an old-school anime fantasy setting with different classes. Branching paths too. Look it up if that sounds up your alley.

Forgot all about that, but the Xbox version is different. New graphics and the controls felt slightly different in a way I couldn't put my finger on. When I play it I just go for the original Saturn version (emulated).

I didn't know it was on Steam though. I looked it up and couldn't find anything about it, and I don't see it in the store.

It got de-listed over a decade ago on Steam, there was a major apocalypse of SEGA's digital library on Windows at one point.

Yeah I had the CHD file for that downloaded. I wanted to hit all of the Treasure games eventually since I enjoyed Radiant Silvergun even though it's hard as balls. I've just been going through a good chunk of the Saturn of recent, both translated and untranlsated and it really is just a special console. It's a shame it didn't seemingly really do all that well anywhere that wasn't Japan.
