Britain's Observer newspaper said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was expected to resign on Monday and set out a timetable ‌for his departure, though a government source said Starmer remained focused on getting on with the job of governing.

The threat to Starmer's position, which has been building for months, increased sharply on Friday when his rival Andy Burnham won a seat in parliament that would allow him to launch a formal leadership challenge.

The Observer report said Starmer was discussing the matter with his wife at his Chequers country residence before making a final decision, but that senior Labour figures expected a clear statement on his ‌future as early as Monday.

However, a government source said Starmer remained focused on his job and pointed to previous statements he has made to that effect.

The British leader said on Friday he would fight any challenge to his position and urged Labour not to tear itself apart with infighting.

More than 100 elected lawmakers in his party - roughly a quarter of all Labour representatives in the House of Commons - have publicly said they want Starmer to quit or set out a timetable for his exit.

In short:

Sir Keir Starmer has announced he will step as prime minister of the United Kingdom.

He said he will remain as caretaker prime minister while a new Labour leader is chosen in the next few weeks.

What's next?

Ex-mayor of Greater Manchester and new Labour MP Andy Burnham is expected to vy for the leadership position.

Sir Keir Starmer says he will resign as prime minister of the United Kingdom.

He said his decision came after speaking with the King earlier today, local time, and was in the best interests of the country.

He will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new Labour leader is chosen in the next few weeks.

Sir Keir made the announcement after facing growing pressure to hand over to a new leader who can try to revive the government’s flagging fortunes

He has been in office since leading Labour to a landslide election victory in July 2024.

In those two years, his popularity and that of the party have plummeted.

His departure follows the victory of popular ex-mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham in a special election last week.

Burnham is due to be sworn in as a member of Parliament today, local time.

Good fucking riddance and god bless! The music blaring in the background with his speech is a true epitome of Britain's current establishment; a total and complete fucking farcical joke.

Also to our fellow starmtroopers: we will fight to the last man!

So does this mean he is quitting politics entirely or will he do that weird thing some PMs do where they just slink off to their actual elected job (which I presume they mostly ignore/delegate while being PM) as MP for Twichester-By-Hastings or whatever?

No, it definitely contributed.

The decision was made as soon as it was obvious Burnham was returning to parliament. The Mandelson stuff fatally wounded him and he was a dead man walking. The Lowe report didn't factor into it.

The Muslim rape gangs are a national scandal, but they're not a Starmer scandal. They're a consequence of decades of government policy and inaction.

Belfast riots . Anyone in the "happenings " community said it wasn't normal riot it was very organised with tight opsec and very targeted . That means the population is organising not just that but the methods and details spread among other right wing groups asking why arent we doing at our town this .

It genuinely spooked everyone and there was zero talk about it after . They desperately trying to memory hole it
This. There's pretty serious opsec and planning going on right now, as I've mentioned in the past.

Not to mention that the government has failed to bust actual extreme right infiltration of the military in recent years (which as I've been informed, is not only still there, but growing).

At this point I feel like it's turning into a standoff where nobody, on all sides, is certain about firing first under the fear of fucking up and losing. But eventually someone is gonna fire.

It's starting to spread that it's official:
he says it himself at a minute-thirty in

Unironically Trump admin is responsible. Before him resigning Elon Musk highlighted Britain's rape and immigration issues by retweeting news about it plus the two tier policing. The British responded demanding twitter to be investigated and fined. That went well as you can think with Trump admin and they probably did something behind the scenes to make him leave before Britain explodes. I do think the Belfast riots was the final nail in the coffin, and usa doesn't want unstable Britain yet .
Starmer deserves it. Get big dogged you fucking commie.

Totally waited until he could officially step down in/after July to get severance.

Is he resigning his seat in the commons as well? This only applies to MPs who lose or otherwise vacate their seat. Prime Minister's who resign that office typically remain an MP at least for the duration of the current parliament.

The office of Prime Minister has different rules for pay and compensation.

Question, does the word Queer carry the same connotations in UK land, and if so, why was this not used as part of the Two-Tier nickname?
Yeah Queer is also known for meaning "faggot" here too. I've heard plenty of people calling him Queer Starmer along with all of the other nicknames.
