No Soviet citizens lived in urban hell squalor under the glorious communist system. The city planning and quality of life you see here is of course all a plot of the bourgeoisie. Before 1991 this city was immaculately planned and run.
These buildings were always fascinating to me since the USSR was essentially preparing for an expected total war of destruction with the USA. Those buildings were of course for living in, but they also doubled as above ground bunkers. As ugly and depressing as they are, they did serve a (at the time) practical function. There's a bit of irony in this as now Russians have to deal with these exact same commieblock hells that were originally intended to bog down NATO armies.

They are ghastly but Russias housing stock, never great to begin with was devasted in WW2, they needed shit built in mass quantity and for cheap. Post war US public housing projects weren't much better.
