Fist of the north star, akira, vampire hunter d, ninja scroll, legend of the galactic heroes, the early Gundam series', a lot of robot shit like gunbuster, evangelion is okay. Picrel is the first anime I knowingly watched (which reminds me; voltron) and kid me thought it was pretty awesome even cut up for the sci-fi channel.

A lot of this will depend on your tolerance for corny slop written for young boys and personal preferences. You could probably just google "classic anime" and read the descriptions for a decent list.

If OP is going to beat off to Daibuster and Doraemon I figure his seed was not getting much use anyway.

gatchaman-ova.jpg
Gatchaman 1994 OVA featuring music by Maurice White from Earth Wind and Fire. Harmony Gold Dub from the 90s is superior to the 2010s re dub, IMO.m, but may be harder to find.

Its a 3 part OVA of the original 70s cartoon/anime. Also called Battle of the Planets or G-Force.

Ruruoni Kenshi, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Pizza Cats, Trigun, Outlaw Star, Slayers and Slayers Return, Bubblegum Crysis: Tokyo 2040

Fist of the North Star, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Classic Gundam, and Gunsmith Cats

Irresponsible Captain Tylor
In the far future, slacker is forced to sing up for the army and he accidentally does so well that they give him his own spaceship to command, all while war is on the horizon.

A nice little military comedy with a likable main character.

Watch only the 24 episode season, ignore the OVA.

Here's episode 1, see if you like it.

Slayers, Rurouni Kenshin, Monster Rancher, Boogiepop Phantom( well it came out in 2000. But it has a grungy look), Sorcerer Hunters, NGE, Blood: the last Vampire(2000), Perfect Blue, Serial Experiments Lain, Fushigi Yuugi, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, G Gundam, Betterman, Urusei Yatsura, Rose of Versailles, and Glass Mask.

the UC Gundam shows, I'm up to ZZ right now and they've been great. Especially love Zeta so far.

Here's a good 2 hours of anime trailers with lots of good choices.
Out of that video in particular, I'd recommend Black Magic M-66 (19:15), Ruin Explorers (46:34), All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku (57:49), Iczelion (1:10:51), and Blue Seed (1:31:00). Blue Seed in particular is a series I'm surprised people don't talk about more.

It just passes with a 1999 date, so going to post the weirdest one for this thread:

The Gregory Horror Show is a CGI anime produced in 1999 that plays out as a psychological horror where you, the protagonist, must make your way through the hellish hotel. Unlike most series, Gregory is completely set in first person with your unseeable main character being a silent protagonist for everything beyond the opener. The fun of the series comes in solving the mystery as to what brought the protagonist to the Gregory house using clues left by the strange characters you encounter. Episodes are 2-5 mins long, making sitting through the whole series a movie length affair.

As a personal anecdote, the first season is very clearly the strongest with the second being much weaker. The third season is good, but goes a completely different direction by making Gregor himself the main character. The fourth season is the worst of the lot focusing on easily the worst character of the series. At some point, the series really dropped the ball going from a good blend of horror/comedy, to progressively trying to be a comedy.

Obligatory need to recommend Detective Conan and Kindaichi Casefiles. Conan is still running but the best episodes are from the 1990s seasons.

Also, here's an obscure one you might not have heard of, the Wizardry OVA:

So get this.... Wizardry was a series of RPGs that began on American PCs, the original game being made by two college kids in their bedroom. Somehow, this series of games became phenomenons in Japan (and basically were the inspiration for every JRPG ever)... leading to them making an anime that kinda-sorta adapts the first game in the series. This OVA is interesting for that alone. I also think its a damn good fantasy romp.

Other anime I know of that are based on RPGs (or RPG-adjascent games):

Dragon Slayer (the series that wound up spawning the Legend of Heroes games). I've never seen the OVA but it got an official localization on VHS.

Xanadu, also part of the Dragon Slayer series.

Dragon Quest has a movie called Crest of Roto... to be honest, it kinda sucks.

there's a two-episode Fire Emblem anime. That was actually my introduction to the franchise.

I may have missed some.
