He has extreme resentment towards his father, Angelo, who is also a veteran. By shitting on 4th of July, he's lashing out against his father for whom 4th of July is important. According to Phil, Angelo also abused Phil's mom but again, Phil's a known liar. My guess is that Angelo didn't like his son's chickenshit antics whether he was unreasonably hard on him or not, and that's the main grudge Phil is holding resentment towards Angelo for, not just the isolated 4th of July incident which may or may not have happened.
