Disaster Racist Magic: The Gathering cards banned, removed from database by publisher - RIP Invoke Prejudice, Cleanse, Stone-Throwing Devils, Pradesh Gypsies, Jihad, Imprison, and Crusade

Article (archive):

On Wednesday, Magic: The Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast took unprecedented measures to remove racist cards from its game. Seven cards in all, dating back to 1994, are now banned from play. Their images will also being removed from the game’s official online database.

“The events of the past weeks and the ongoing conversation about how we can better support people of color have caused us to examine ourselves, our actions, and our inactions,” Wizards said in a statement. “We appreciate everyone helping us to recognize when we fall short. We should have been better, we can be better, and we will be better.”

The list of now-banned cards is: Invoke Prejudice, Cleanse, Stone-Throwing Devils, Pradesh Gypsies, Jihad, Imprison, and Crusade.

One card in particular, Invoke Prejudice, was singled out. It shows a hooded executioner with a black axe. “If opponent casts a Summon spell that does not match the color of one of the creatures under your control, that spell is countered,” says the card. It effectively kills off creatures that don’t look like the creatures already on the table.

Gatherer, the official online database of every Magic card ever published, displays the card at a web URL ending in “1488,” numbers that are synonymous with white supremacy.

“The [Invoke Prejudice] card is racist and made even worse by the multiverse ID it was unfortunately codified with years ago,” Wizards said. “There’s no place for racism in our game, nor anywhere else.”

All cards will be replaced online with a note that calls out their racist depictions, text, or a combination thereof.

“There’s much more work to be done as we continue to make our games, communities, and company more inclusive,” Wizards said. “Know that we work every day to be better and that we hear you. We look forward to sharing more of our plans with you as our games and organization evolve.”

Magic: The Gathering recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. It also recently made another alteration to its catalog of cards, changing the name of a Godzilla-themed promotional card to remove a perceived reference to the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19.

On the other hand, this one somehow still exists:

tbh...I don't even look at the art anymore.

Edit : To explain..the Gideon bullshit in War of the Spark killed the entirety of the Lore for me, I just don't care about anything going on whatsoever and that comes from a real Vorthos, i have -ALLLLLLL- the books, and my habit of buying Fatpacks was originally just to buy the books.

PS. Read the Kamigawa books, Toshiro Umezawa is an awesome motherfucker.
Which Gideon bullshit? Need to narrow it down. ;)

Kaladesh had bugged me, but Amonket just killed any interest. It could have been a good story, but modern writers just CANNOT write any kind of conflict any more. It's either one side or the other just does a complete, effortless win, there's never any struggle or tactics employed.

I'm really suprosed by the amount of artists (artist being used in all medium; storytelling, writing, acting, drawing, etc) that can sit back and watch a committee alter and destroy their works and not say a thing, but in fact encourage it in most cases. Figured the absolute worst thing you could want done to your creative endeavour is have someone else iron fist alter it.

This new breed of artists really do lack soul if they are so happy to stand back and let the masses take control of their works.

People have thought for a bit that The Wanderer is pretty much an Avatar of Emrakul cause of the Shrine of the Forsaken God's art which is the 3 big Eldrazi in human form. The Wanderer looks a bit like Emeria (center), which is Emrakul.

I don't exactly buy it myself, but I wouldn't be shocked either. The moon on Innistrad is only gonna hold her so long anyway.
Not that wotc really cares about their own lore, but Emrakul intentionally sealed itself within the moon and it's implied they can leave whenever they want.

Guessing this means all of the cards that feature Terese Nielsen's art are on the chopping block.

But they'll probably keep this one on principle alone.

>defacing a $600 card because you don't like the artist
Man, daddy's not gonna be happy when he finds out what the trust fund is being spent on.

I'm willing to be the back of that card is a train-wreck just looking at the edge wear I can see on it from the front and the weird splotchy border. So while scralling that shit on it def is gonna hurt the value the card was at least already in kinda bad shape if I were to guess.

Plus troon can sell it as a alter or some dumb shit.

That one buck toothed troon managed to get away with it because they love bending a knee to troons. It’d be a shame if they banned Terese Nielsen’s art from the game because it’d mean banning a lot of cards like force of will, where the only readily available printings use her art barring the judge promos.

On the note of Harold McNeill, he drew a lot of stuff like this. A lot of his art is pretty great then you come across something like this and it’s just too much.

It's a guru island, it could be beat far worse than that and still be worth hundreds.

I'm well aware of what it is, and yeah probably from a private buyer but if you tried to sell it to any of the big retailers they would probably give you 1/4 of the value if you're lucky. Especially with that scrawled on it.

I posted my thoughts on this in the proper MTG thread and that it would be a shame if 4chan got a hold of Liliana of the Veil and used an old book about the "Racist Veil between blacks and whites" to make That card problematic and that I hope it never happens. (No really please don't fucking do that I have a foiled out paper jund deck..I don't want 800 dollars of that deck to vanish)

No. The only way to wake up all these hobby industries whose customers are nerds is to make them pay. Hard. People need to send extensive lists to WotC and get every possible card banned for being waysis and culturally insensitive. And then get White and Black and Red removed from the game entirely. Make Hasbro suffer so hard they have to sell WotC to survive.

That is the only way to get these gaming, comics, and movie companies to uncuck themselves. "Go woke, go broke" clearly didn't get the message across. The lamb must be sacrificed to restore order to the house.

Crossposting this on the main MTG thread, but now even Joe Rogan has weighed in on this.

EDIT: Tim Pool has weighed in on it too.

Doesn't this game have like... devils and shit? It's a battle game. You're not supposed to be nice to your opponent's creatures while you're killing them. Isn't that the point?

Can't you just let the "evil racist cards" be another thing on the pile of mean things you can do to your opponent?
