Disaster Racist Magic: The Gathering cards banned, removed from database by publisher - RIP Invoke Prejudice, Cleanse, Stone-Throwing Devils, Pradesh Gypsies, Jihad, Imprison, and Crusade

Article (archive):

On Wednesday, Magic: The Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast took unprecedented measures to remove racist cards from its game. Seven cards in all, dating back to 1994, are now banned from play. Their images will also being removed from the game’s official online database.

“The events of the past weeks and the ongoing conversation about how we can better support people of color have caused us to examine ourselves, our actions, and our inactions,” Wizards said in a statement. “We appreciate everyone helping us to recognize when we fall short. We should have been better, we can be better, and we will be better.”

The list of now-banned cards is: Invoke Prejudice, Cleanse, Stone-Throwing Devils, Pradesh Gypsies, Jihad, Imprison, and Crusade.

One card in particular, Invoke Prejudice, was singled out. It shows a hooded executioner with a black axe. “If opponent casts a Summon spell that does not match the color of one of the creatures under your control, that spell is countered,” says the card. It effectively kills off creatures that don’t look like the creatures already on the table.

Gatherer, the official online database of every Magic card ever published, displays the card at a web URL ending in “1488,” numbers that are synonymous with white supremacy.

“The [Invoke Prejudice] card is racist and made even worse by the multiverse ID it was unfortunately codified with years ago,” Wizards said. “There’s no place for racism in our game, nor anywhere else.”

All cards will be replaced online with a note that calls out their racist depictions, text, or a combination thereof.

“There’s much more work to be done as we continue to make our games, communities, and company more inclusive,” Wizards said. “Know that we work every day to be better and that we hear you. We look forward to sharing more of our plans with you as our games and organization evolve.”

Magic: The Gathering recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. It also recently made another alteration to its catalog of cards, changing the name of a Godzilla-themed promotional card to remove a perceived reference to the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19.

Here are some of the cards in question:

On the other hand, this one somehow still exists:

Azorious are more of the judges, Boros are the sterotypical beat cop.

Boros sure soldiers more akin to national guard, Azorius' Return to Ravnica mechanic was literal detain and depicted as arresting.

Azorius deal is law and order, both in making and enforcing it. Azorius are 100% the cops off Ravnica.

Boros is about marshall might and cooperation. They are much more of a militaristic organization.

Also, sucks that anyone who bought a $200+ Invoke Prejudice just had the collector value of that card erased. And any card you might want to invest in could be declared problematic... seems like the kinda shit the reserved list was made in response to. Maybe Wizards can put Hasbro's money where their mouth is and offer to buy back all these problematic cards so that they can destroy them. Seems the socially responsible thing to do.

Fun fact: Disruptive Student is Teferi. He's actually in a whole lot of cards nowadays, and is the face of the new set that's coming out later this month.

Also, this card:

has been on the ban chopping block for 2 years now and hasn't been banned yet. I WONDER WHY?
He's been a candidate to be on the ban list in multiple formats, for that. The card's design all but kills a lot of reactive play, and it was after a previous version of the card that was already pretty damn good.

Edit in italics to fix a big mistake.

I'll take my lates if I've somehow missed this being mentioned, but this is quite transparently a smokescreen following someone race-baiting against them.
Just the other day, we had this screed
being published, alleging race issues with the Magic team. In light of that, WotC had to do something to distract the Twitter mob, and so it was time for the wacky KKK ghosts to go, alongside a handful of completely innocuous cards. Crusade is the only one that really saw any play, but give them and inch and they'll take a mile, so expect bannings to continue until morale improves.

As an aside, Gatherer is absolutely awful as a resource of reference and Scryfall, which is better in just about every way, continues to list all the naughty cards.

That black artist thing is absolute BS as a professional illustrator. They hire on portfolio alone. Half the time Art Directors don't know your name until they decide to call you, they see your work first. If you didn't land a job that's your portfolio being shit - not your skin colour. And WotC uses freelancers for decades. Unless they're keeping huge tabs on every single piece of art and artist.there's no telling the overall race quota they've had.

What has caused these companies to go off the deep end and what can stop it?

Nuke China.

Imma get real tin foil hatty, but these riots are happening in to many countries, and bring supported by to many companies to be organic. This is China's response to cutting off Hong Kong, our glowies have instigated riots, no reason to those that glow yellow can't. If only our glowies work for this country and not for themselves.

What has caused these companies to go off the deep end...
A fear of a combination of boycotts, discrimination lawsuits, and shareholder rebellion; plus, a lot of their employees have already drunk the Koolaid and are true believers in the cause.

...and what can stop it?
Nothing. You can try to mitigate the boycotts with your financial support, but you can't unsue someone or undo the PR damage that comes with having coordinated media coverage of, "HEY, DIS COMAPNY RACISS". Social justice politics are the politics of the elites these days, so all of the money and all of the power are there - a company would be foolish not to kowtow to that.

Teferi, Time Reveler isn't banned in anything at the moment and hasn't been ever.

The whole thing is the same as the freakout over demons in Magic in the 90's, except worse. Way worse because this sort of thought policing now has way more institutional support than the fundies did in the 90's.

This nonsense thought policing was a joke when it was done by fundies. Now it's coming from inside the house. Seriously nobody should support these greedy cunts at Wizards of the Coast anyway. If the entire thing ceased to exist entirely and every person who worked there had their head put on a spike it would improve the world generally and gaming specifically. These thieving bastards and their shitty cash grab card game have sucked more out of the gaming economy than any other single entity and have no moral standing whatsoever with their idiotic woke bullshit they're just faking to impress Twitter checkmarks anyway.

What has caused these companies to go off the deep end and what can stop it?

Destroying them utterly. It's not really possible to avoid any casual virtue signaling asshole, or even reasonable, but once people are fucking up actual gameplay even slightly over some utter bullshit it's time to stop supporting them entirely. MtG has been a fucking scam for literally decades though and idiots have continued supporting it. So I don't see it ever actually happening.

But if you want to see change, go out of your way to support people who don't do this idiotic shit. Or swindle enormous amounts of money out of the community but WotC has done that since it existed.

Ah, I forgot. My dumb ass meant to say he's on the short list to take a ban, but I'll take the loss on that one. I will say T3feri's still bad design overall, though the same could be said of his planeswalker card designs in general when you get away from the PW decks. IIRC Dominaria Teferi helped revive Azorius control before T3feri ended up being better in the mirror. I like Teferi as a character, but they've really pushed his cards due to being one of the only black Walkers in general.

I feel like they retconned Tezzeret to be black now I always assumed he was probably Middle Eastern looking a bit if anything.

He's black though, and look at his card names.

I guess all black people are looking to steal stuff and scheme about hurting stuff while lording over bridges?

oh so that's what pewdiepie meant

Just saying red gets to experience for a year what blue has experienced for 25 years now. Get out of here with your blue privilege and let some other colors have a turn. Red mana matters!

(Nah, just playing. WotC design is shit. I just find it immensely amusing that they're finally wrecking other colors when it was always blue back in the day who would break shit - and black for a weekend here and there.)

EDIT: Also funny you talk about preordain and left off...

Awwww yeah. That was the shit back in the day.
That is because Preordain is closer to Looting than ponder.

Next time someone on the left invokes the ol "slippery slope" line about free speech, I swear to God I will lose it.

Why, in any situation, would you rather limit art/speech/ideas, when just allowing everything is so much easier? Allow everything and one can make their own conclusions. Censor certain things, becoming increasingly vague or stupid, and everyone loses. Eventually it will. e something you love.

THIS is a slippery slope, and companies are beyond happy to compete with eachother in the virtue signaling Olympics.

If anything the entire concept of censorship and cancel culture shows the corporations' and government's true view of the people they service: they do not believe any of us to be responsible enough to make our own conclusions, to self filter. They do not think of us as adults. We are just irresponsible.

This whole situation reminds me of many issues, but the bottom line is that they dont get what we want when it comes to free speech.

We dont want everyone to agree with us, for people to have to read our words, or to even understand them. It is the freedom to be able to say these things that we want. We want everyone, even those who hate us, to be able to say their part. Who loses when everyone can go uncensored? Because we all sure as hell lose when a small minority decides what an entire society can and cannot enjoy.

These people seem so tone deaf to the outside world. They either are far more concerned with their side maintaining small "victories" or they truly wish to divide this country further.

More and more every day do I believe we have reached a schism that we cannot repair. That no one wants to repair. It may have started as far back as when the Republicans blocked Obama's SCOTUS nomination during the last year of his term, or maybe history will see the George Floyd situation as its turning point. But either way this is going to come to a boiling point, and soon.

If Biden dies, or Trump wins, I fear we may actually see some sort of soft coup. This won't be fought on the same level as the Civil War. There will be no massive battles, only a cold civil war... but if there is war, it is beyond the realm of ending without this country completely fracturing into two, maybe three pieces.

And perhaps this will be a good thing, as each new country vys to be the most attractive to residents and corporations. Perhaps they will compete in the form of promising completely free speech, or a better voting system? Competition is good. I just dont like the idea of a power vacuum.

I wonder if the chans are scheming up cards to suggest WotC to ban, Land Tax would be a good candidate. (it sees a fair bit of play in legacy too!)

The only problem is the nose ain't quite big enough, but I've already seen it mentioned a few times now. Along with Dockside Extortionist. (Which just got created last year)

I'd go for the Extortionist myself.

Edit:

It made Forbes (archive)

Everything took a hit today, but Hasbro seems to have taken a bit of bigger one than a lot of others.

I posted my thoughts on this in the proper MTG thread and that it would be a shame if 4chan got a hold of Liliana of the Veil and used an old book about the "Racist Veil between blacks and whites" to make That card problematic and that I hope it never happens. (No really please don't fucking do that I have a foiled out paper jund deck..I don't want 800 dollars of that deck to vanish)

Between the two Innistrad blocks, there are a total of two (2) cards with "crusade" or "crusader" in the card name. In addition, there are seven (7) cards with "inquisitor" in the card name. There is one (1) card with "crusade" in the flavor text, and there are fifteen (15) cards with "inquisitor" or "inquisition" in the flavor text.
These concepts make up a crucial part of the plane's lore, and considering all the things that were happening when we last saw Innistrad, I'm not sure where it can continue if it were to suddenly drop those ideas. All sets within the blocks have an actual crusade backed by a church that seeks to purge all werewolves, zombies, vampires, and demons from the world, and more recently a purging of "sinners" by an inquisition (backed by the church).
Innistrad has always been at 1 on the Rabiah scale, meaning it will come back in another set at some point for certain, but what sacrifices will have to be made to the setting for it to match these new attitudes?

The Plane was ruined last time anyways, if they decide it is too problematic to visit again i will be glad. it means NO MORE FUCKING EMRAKUL.

So after bitching about the decision, desolator magic decides to invite the audience to find cards which weren't banned (and maybe should be under these new rules). Should be timestamped.

How to recover from Eldrazi bullshit in lore and game mechanics is a problem as well, but we'll see how that would play out in the return to Zendikar that, from what I recall hearing, will not be featuring Eldrazi.
At this point in time we just have to wait and see what WOTC decides to do, I guess.

Zendikar is different though, Ulamog and Kozilek are dead. Innistrad has the most powerful Eldrazi sitting in the sky.
