It's a proportional response, in my experience. I've always been rather mild on how I feel about racism. My family has a lot of mixed babies within it so I grew up around all manner of racist jokes and statements from every direction. It wasn't until recently that black people, online, were catching strays from white people for daring to say, "nigga," after dozens of years of those same white people telling me that the word was fine because it was, "reclaimed," amongst other situations similar in scope.
The response to that mentality is pretty clear. Just keep making the same statements but even worse to rile them up, often with the goal of proving they're more racist than the people they're accusing (this is usually true).
