"The thing to keep in mind is that laws are framed by those who happen to be in power and for the purpose of keeping them in power." - Mary Brave Bird

Every lie incurs a debt to the truth, and sooner or later that debt must be paid.

"The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win."

Free people who own their small holdings and assets and operate small businesses, within careful regulation to avoid parasitism and rent-seeking, are essential to a true workers' state. Pricing data from these free markets can be used to optimize production at state-owned enterprises and identify problems.

No honest work should ever be denigrated or reduced to poverty wages because some asshole on Wall Street who has never worked an honest day in his life said so. As if it's bad to be a manual laborer or a "voke" pursuing a trade...fuck you, these people are the bedrock of society and deserve far more than they are getting.

This rubbed me the wrong way hearing it from my parents and others when I was growing up and it still does today.

"I have great faith in the power and influence of facts. It is seldom that anything is permanently gained by holding back a fact." - Booker T. Washington

"Treat people the way they treat others"
The old golden rule is dead.
Isn't it "Treat people they want to be treated"? I guess this assumes you're wanting to be positive towards them, whereas a cunt deserves no such positive reception, unless it's a perfect world and a bully learns that being nice to people is a better alternative and your reminder corrects their behavior.

“When we have words for something, we’ve already gone beyond it. In all speaking there is a grain of contempt. Language, so it seems, was invented only for what is mediocre, common, communicable.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

“If we take the widest and wisest view of a Cause, there is no such thing as a Lost Cause because there is no such thing as a Gained Cause. We fight for lost causes because we know that our defeat and dismay may be the preface to our successors' victory, though that victory itself will be temporary; we fight rather to keep something alive than in the expectation that anything will triumph.”
― T.S. Eliot, For Lancelot Andrewes

“Utilitarian economists, skeletons of schoolmasters, Commissioners of Fact, genteel and used-up infidels, gabblers of many little dog’s-eared creeds, the poor you will have always with you. Cultivate in them, while there is yet time, the utmost graces of the fancies and affections, to adorn their lives so much in need of ornament; or, in the day of your triumph, when romance is utterly driven out of their souls, and they and a bare existence stand face to face, Reality will take a wolfish turn, and make an end of you.”
― Charles Dickens, Hard Times

“But vain the Sword and vain the Bow,
They never can work War's overthrow.
The Hermit's prayer and the Widow's tear
Alone can free the World from fear.

For a Tear is an intellectual thing,
And a Sigh is the sword of an Angel King,
And the bitter groan of the Martyr's woe
Is an arrow from the Almighty's bow.”
― William Blake

“What we mean, in the last resort, by 'an answer to prayer', is that from the beginning of time, before he set about the building of the worlds, God foreknew every prayer that human lips would breathe, and took it into account. That, and nothing less, is the staggering claim which we make every time we say the 'Our Father'.

If I could have collected all the symposiasts in a room, this is the issue I would have put to them, to 'try their spirits'. By all means (I would have said) let us leave dogma on one side, let us take no notice of all the secular disputes which divide the sympathies of Christian people, let us refrain as far as possible from prying into the mysterious secrets, too high for our ken. But- do you believe that God runs the world, and cares what happens in the world? For, if so, you will have to find something better than a pale, pantheist abstraction to satisfy your notion of God. And if not, you may spare your inkstands; nothing you can tell us about your religion will ever strengthen an infirm purpose or heal a broken heart.”
― Ronald Knox, Caliban in Grub Street

"But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs."
-- George Eliot, Middlemarch

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

--Invictus

"It's all about respect"

"Respect" here being a combination of wisdom, open-mindedness and, when necessary, caution. Respect your friends. Respect your enemies. Respect all the situations and things you encounter in your day to day that can enrich or harm you. Lack of respect is what causes mistakes. You didn't respect someone in your personal life enough so they left. You didn't respect your adversary enough and now he's fucked you over much worse than you anticipated. You didn't respect the years of warnings about substance abuse and now you're addicted. You didn't respect how dangerous this neighbourhood is and now you're on your ass bleeding and you lost $50.

It's about instilling responsibility in yourself and minimising hubris. Be respectful of everything.

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish…

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!
-The Great Dictator

“It’s like the last page in a 500-page book. All of us would really have to fuck it up for that last page to ruin the 499.” – John Cena

“Ehhh, there’s a way.” – Triple H

Sadly, a lot of media ARE indeed trying very hard to fuck it up on the very last page to ruin the 499.

I don't live by quotes and maxims, unless you count my own, but here's a drinking cheer my Dad and my uncle say:
"Here's to you, here's to me, may we never disagree, but if we do, fuck you! Here's to me!"

The world tuned in for every GoT episode yet the last season somehow invalidated those years of shared excitement. I understand why but it's still nuts that we just collectively agreed that GoT was ruined by one season of 8.

I've been reading Meditations and it's nothing but good quotes but the kind you forget if you don't repeat them constantly, and even then they're such ingrained life advice from the author that you can't easily implement them in your own life.
