This just popped into my mind, were there internet lolcows before Chris Chan? (I.E. lolcows that had some prominence among a group of people on the internet before Chris Chan) I know Chris is notable for being the big internet lolcow that broke into the spotlight, but that got me thinking if there were exceptional users that could be considered lolcows before Chris.

I'd never really thought about it, but if I'd had the foresight to archive half the dramas people used to post on their bulletin boards to their thousand "friends" on Myspace two decades ago, there'd actually be quite a bit to laugh at.

I'm surprised David Gonterman doesn't get referenced more around here, as he was basically a proto-Chris for the dial-up era. His poorly drawn SatAM self-insert comics often mentioned his ongoing wars with trolls, he leaned on Sailor Moon to banish homosexuality, over-shared humiliating life details, etc etc. Alas, I think most of the best Gonterman content is long lost to time and DFE.

Dude, Gonterman was the first lolcow I ever knew of, even before I knew the term! I remember lurking Portal of Evil way back when and seeing the threads on him, his horrible art, and his horrible fanfiction. I remember a big deal of his was wanting to show his portfolio to Stan Lee, thinking that that would catapult him to being a professional comic artist and writer.

Sadly yes, most of that does seem to be long gone, deleted along with PoE.

Dating all the way back to the Usenet early 90s was the Tiny Tunes stalker that caused the show to end. I'd imagine Usenet has the most amount of lolcows lost to time in general so those retards in the 80s and early 90s should consider themselves lucky

No mention of Derek Smart? Back in the day, you say his name three times and he'd come to your internet forum to yell at people for not liking Battlecruiser 3000 AD.

UsagiKou/Lori (who has a thread in BP) has been a cosplay dramacow since the early 2000s. Well before Chris was first posted on /b/. A lot of her vintage drama has been lost to time but a surprising amount still exists, plus she hasn't changed in like 20 years.

Snapesnogger I think predates the discovery of Chris by at least a year or two, however as far as I know she matured out of being a cow and fell into obscurity years ago.

FF7 house also predates Chris and the perpetrators have popped up in other fandoms since (though are quick to DFE when their real identities get sniffed out).

I remember discovering Gene Ray and Time Cube before CWC (the site apparently went up in 1997) but idk if he counts as a "lolcow" since he wasn't being heavily trolled/"milked". Just a kook who published his ideas on the early internet.

Considering some thread subjects here are just kooks who are (hopefully) being left alone, I'd say Timecube counts as at least lolcow adjacent.

I also strongly believe the Timecube site should be preserved by the library of congress as culturally significant.
