I imagine Phil has an obsessive routine with this bike every day that goes something like this:
- Uses an $80 combination digital tire pressure gauge/emergency pepper spray device to check the tires for proper inflation.
- Repacks the panniers with various maps of mexico and south america in a slightly different order than they were yesterday.
- Debates and decides what weapons to pack in the panniers that day.
- Sprays WD-40 on the chain like a moron and gets it on the carpet.
- Wipes the frame down with a dirty T-shirt.
- Talks to it about how he's going to put more stickers on it.
- Puts his helmet on and looks at himself in the mirror wearing it.
- Pushes the bike to a different part of the living room.
- Takes pictures of it and himself.
- Loses interest and wanders off until tomorrow.

Years ago there were pictures of happy people of all cultures around the world holding hands.
Maybe Phil is trying to imitate how he perceives the totally homogenous "Latin American culture" -- a shrine to Mary, but with a bike instead.
