It is Millennials: The Show

Speaking as a millennial, Parks and Recreation was aggravatingly millennial. The underlying message was that hope and change of tearing down stale, pale, and male institutions can only be achieved with diversity. Leslie Knope’s only flaw was trusting a system that she learned about in civics class, fucked up by Old White Men. However, thanks to the plucky cast of hypercompetent girlbosses, quirky minorities, and a sprinkling of doofy white guys, Amy Poehler was able to get whatever she wanted. She’d show up the next day with a massive binder of a plan, something the show itself started poking fun of after a while. It of course featured Michelle Obama in an episode just to put the cherry on top of the overall millennial-focused goal of hope and change.

You could tell it bothered Poehler that Ron Swanson was the favorite character of the show. Too popular to kill off or ruin, he became overly flanderized. In the end though, the show ended up being wish fulfillment for Poehler banging a younger man (Adam Scott) as it became obvious to even her that nobody gave a shit about the girlbossing.

Parks and Recreation was too ambitious for its own good. I don’t hate it because it ultimately failed at what it tried to achieve. But if anyone wanted to find out the legacy of millennials, I’d direct them to watch this show.
