I don't know about the 'beets, but alcoholics have a tendency of losing weight because they simply don't eat. The first reason they don't eat,which I think applies to Blade, is that they drink to the point of blacking out and forget to eat. The second reason is their body's caloric needs are met by the alcohol so they don't have a metabolic need to eat. They might eat something fierce when they come to, but when you're late-stage alcy your next meal is more liquor & soda.

Very late stage alcoholics will binge for days and wind up with serious stomach/GI issues that last for a few days to where they cannot consume any liquids or solid food without throwing up, compounding the not-eating thing.
