Modern CODs you basically have to be inside the other player to melee them. When donos have asked him about playing COD again, he's even admitted that he was never that good, he was just "taking advantage of a glitch." Even if the lunge distance was fixed, he's in his 40s, it's just harder to be competitive in vidya at that age (especially when you factor in wet-brain and diabetic neuropathy).
